Rex Allen Wyatt was born July 3, 1954 in Sterling, Kansas.  He died on January 23, 2015 in California.  He is survived by his parents, Dick and Annie Wyatt of Wichita, Kansas. Immediate survivors are sons, Jeffrey Wyatt of Concord, California and Joshua Wyatt and wife, Micaiah, of Lakeville, Minnesota and 4 Grandchildren.  He has on brother, Ray and wife, Joan, and 2 nephews, Tate and Tanner Wyatt.
Rex attended schools in Sterling and graduated from Sterling High School in 1972.  He enlisted in the Navy that summer and spent 4 years in the Vietnam War aboard the ship Coral Sea.
In high school Rex was very active in the sports activities of the school, playing and lettering in football and basketball in his Sophomore, Junior and Senior years.  He was also active in the music department singing many solos and receiving high honors at contests.  He was active in Boy Scouts.
After his discharge from the Navy, he remained in California and worked at Safeway.  He will be remembered and missed by his family and many friends.
Services will be held at 1:30 P.M., Saturday, February 7, 2015 at Birzer Funeral Home, 203 North 7th, Sterling, Kansas with Rev. Rev. Donald H. Calderwood died on January 16, 2015, in Wichita, KS at the age of 83. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn; sons, Douglas, Brian and Timothy, and their spouses; siblings, Lois Sieverling, Frances Calderwood and William Calderwood. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert O. and Nelle (Lindsay) Calderwood; brother Robert and infant brother Alvin. Don and Evelyn have 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Don was born on March 5, 1931, in Sterling, KS. He graduated from Sterling College in 1953 with a degree in Chemistry. He graduated from Pittsburgh-Xenia Theological Seminary in 1956 with a Master of Divinity degree. He was ordained in the United Presbyterian Church (now PCUSA) in 1956. He also earned a Masters in Educational Counseling.

In 1956 he married Evelyn Campbell. That fall, they left to serve as missionaries to Pakistan where they worked for 34 years. They were founding and long-term staff members of Murree Christian School where they served in many capacities. After returning to the United States in 1989, Rev. Calderwood served four Presbyterian churches in Kansas and Missouri as interim minister.

Don volunteered for Habitat for Humanity and was a member of the Retired Business and Professional Mens’ Club. He enjoyed playing golf with his many friends.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 24 at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 2258 Marigold, Wichita, KS 67204. Rev. Art Smith will officiate the ceremony. CARLENE HUTCHESON,  74, of Topeka, KS  went to be with her Lord on January 10, 2014, after a yearlong struggle with various health issues.

She was born on January 25, 1940, in Topeka, KS, to Rev. Thomas and Marjorie Hutcheson of Denison, KS. In 1949, her family moved to the island of Cyprus, where her parents were missionary teachers.

Following her childhood in Cyprus, Carlene graduated from Washburn Rural High School in Topeka, KS, in 1957, and was a 1961 graduate of Geneva College.

Carlene dedicated her career to educating children. She worked as an elementary school teacher in Park City, KS, and in Topeka, KS. Upon her retirement in 2000, Carlene continued to be active in various retired teachers’ organizations, the Topeka Reformed Presbyterian Church, and Meals on Wheels.

Carlene was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Elizabeth Hutcheson. She is survived by her brother Tom Hutcheson and wife Sue; niece Christi Hutcheson; niece Karen Montemayor and husband Jim; nephew Jim Hutcheson; grandniece Rachel Montemayor; and grandnephews Luke and Nate Montemayor. Her godly spirit, thoughtfulness, and generosity will be missed by her many relatives and friends.

Visitation will be held Friday, January 16 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home, 1321 SW 10th Street, Topeka, KS. A funeral service will be held Saturday, January 17 at 10 am at the Topeka Reformed Presbyterian Church, 8345 SW 33rd Street, Topeka, KS 66614.

Arden William Haltom, of Granbury, born Aug. 16, 1928 to Albert and Laura Patton Haltom in Lawrence, Kan., died Oct. 28, 2013 at Community Hospice in Burleson.

A memorial service was held Thursday, Oct. 31, 2013, at Granbury First Presbyterian Church.

Arden graduated from Harper Kansas High School, served in the U.S. Navy and completed tech school at Oklahoma A & M. He went to work for Halliburton Co. He married Deanna Crane on Nov. 13, 1960 in Great Bend, Kansas.

His 32 years with Halliburton Co. found them living in Kansas, Texas, Oklahoma and Manama, Bahrain.

Arden retired in 1986, moving to Granbury in 1989. He enjoyed traveling, both in the RV and internationally. He was a talented builder and woodworker. He volunteered his many talents with church camps, National Parks and Habitat for Humanity. He bragged of many “Great Adventures” with his grandkids in the RV.

Preceding him in death were his parents and a sister, Patsy Tubach.

Survivors: Wife, Deanna; children, Kelly and wife, Anna Marie, Kenneth and wife, Velinda, Heidi and husband, Dan Thorne; four grandchildren; two great-granddaughters.

Ted Schafer, 72, of Hutchinson passed away at home on Sept. 12, 2014. Ted was born in Sterling, Kan., to Don and Cleta Jeter Schafer on March 12, 1942. He graduated from Alden High School and attended Hutchinson Community College.

On Nov. 12, 1961, he married his high school sweetheart, Carolyn Harmon in Alden, Kan. They had three children, Todd, Dean and Leigh.

Ted farmed for many years in the Alden and Sterling area, and then later became a supervisor at the Hutchinson Correctional Facility. After retiring, he was a partner and manager of Salt City Payday Loan. Ted was a member of the American Legion and the ROMEOS. He served in the Army Reserves. Ted enjoyed working in his workshop and riding his Can-Am Spyder. He loved spending time with his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Carolyn; son, Todd (Suzanne) Schafer of Belton, Mo.; daughter, Leigh Riggs of Hutchinson; sister, Connie (David) Moore of Littleton, Colo.; grandchildren, Matt Schafer and fiancee Shawna Robl, Ellinwood, Spencer Riggs, Hutchinson, Kyle Riggs, Great Bend, and Brooke Boeken, Sterling; in-laws, Warren and Jan Wisby, Hutchinson, Keith and Teresa Harmon, and Bud and Marty Harmon of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; and many special nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, Dean; brother-in-law, Rex Harmon; niece, DeLora Wisby Butts; and nephew, Steven Harmon.

Amy held many awards such as: the Sho Nuf McCue (Turkey) AJQHA Champion 1979, AJQHA Youth Supreme 1980, 35 AJQHA All-Arounds-Top 10 1980, fifth in Reining and sixth in Western Riding, Kansas Horse of the Year 1979 and 1980, KJQHA All-Around 13 and Under Youth 1980, Reserve High Point Youth Quarter Horse Congress, Columbus Ohio, AJQHA Youth World held in Oklahoma, top 10 in Horsemanship, Western Riding and Barrel Racing.

Amy is survived by: her daughter, Kayla Temple of Olmitz; father, Dr. Roy C. Russell and wife Susan of Hutchinson; mother, Karen Russell of Hutchinson; companion, Brian Davis of St. John; brother, Burke Russell and wife Dini of Florida; and two nephews. She was preceded in death by: grandparents, John W. and Bernadine Russell and Damon H. and Vivian D. McFadden.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 15, 2014, at South Hutchinson United Methodist Church, with Pastor John Paul and Reverend Warren Hett officiating. Burial will follow in Sterling Community Cemetery. Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson.

Betty Carol Colle Garey passed away on June 5, 2014, at her home in Hutchinson. Betty Carol was born on July 24, 1921, in Saxman, Kan., to her parents, Anton “Tony” and Mabel Vera Pallister Colle.

Betty Carol was preceded in death by: her parents, Tony and Mabel Colle; two brothers, Keith and Wayne Colle; son-in-law, Robert Dee Stange. Survivors include: husband, Leonard Ree Garey of the home; son, Keith Dean Garey and wife Sharon Lynn Stafford Garey of Sterling; daughter, Marilyn Carol Garey Volin and her husband James Milton Volin of Overland Park; two grandchildren, Curt Dean Garey of New York and Kimberly Lynn Trujillo and husband Ed Trujillo of Hutchinson; two brothers, Gene Colle of Hutchinson and Loren Colle of Sterling; two sisters, Venetta Arganbright of Nebraska and Joyce Munson of California. Betty Carol was a Christian woman who loved the Lord with all her heart. She was a devoted Christian daughter, wife, mother and grandmother who is with her Lord this day.

Funeral service will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 10, 2014, at CrossPoint Church, Westbrook Campus with Pastor Dustin Busick officiating. Burial will be at Sterling Community Cemetery.
