STERLING BULLETIN obituary 12/24/1895
Another veteran gone-aged 80 years, 3 months and two days. Jacob Shaffer, late of Walnut township, died at the home of his son-in-law, Mr. Finkey, Dec. 24. Mr. Shaffer was born in Cumberland Co., Pa., Sept 22nd, 1815. He married Miss Margret Gettel in 1840, was converted and joined the United Brethren church the same year. He remained a constant member until his death, having served 55 years. He also served in the Union army in the war of the rebellion. Having served nine months as a first enlistment, he then enlisted for the rest of the war. He leaves three children who will miss his godly counsel and Christian example. This community loved and respected him. His funeral was largely attended on Dec. 26th. The sermon was preached by Rev. Peter Hallowell, Rev. S. W. Foulk assisting in the service. We laid his body to rest in the cemetery while all were ready to say, tried and true in all relations of life-Well done good and faithful servant, enter into the joys of thy Lord.

age 80,husband of Margret (Gettel), PA Vol. Union Army. A Civil War veteran, his service records claim that he was drafted, but he was two years too old for conscription and likely enlisted as a substitute, a contention support by that fact that he understated his age by three years when he enlisted in York on October 25, 1862. He mustered into federal service there November 7 as a corporal with Co. H, 166th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka “Drafted Militia”), and honorably discharged with his company July 28, 1863. Undaunted by that experience, he also enlisted in Harrisburg February 21, 1865, mustered into federal service there March 1 as a corporal with the second organization of Co C, 101st Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company June 25, 1865.Family links:

Margaret Minnie May McBride was born on February 4, 1869, in Chariton, Iowa. She married Reuben Jennings Shay on July 11, 1894. They had four children in 14 years. She died on March 27, 1945, in Sterling, Kansas, at the age of 76, and was buried there.
Margaret’s parents were William H. McBride and Aurelia Lydia Fisher, also buried in Sterling. I also was able to find their obituaries too. I noted that a number of 1861-1865 War vets are buried in Sterling. William too was a vet, serving in the 76th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He was a member of the Kansas State Legislature in 1885-1886, practiced law in Kansas, was a newspaper editor and served as the mayor of Fergus Falls, Minnesota.
My parents, William McBride Shay, Jr. and Loretta Goodfellow grew up in Lyons, KS.
