Obituary Sterling Kansas Bulletin 11/15/1917
Adam J. Shaner was born in Delaware county, Ohio, August 6, 1846 and spent his boyhood in that state. In 1862 he volunteered his services in defense of his country and enlisted in Co. K., 82nd Ohio Infantry, and served until the end of the war.
November 6, 1876, Mr. Shaner was married in St. Augustine, Florida, to Mary P. Andrews. To this union were born three daughters, Mrs. W. J. Patterson, of Ness City, Mrs. N. J. Miller of Hutchinson, and Mrs. S. M. Striplin of Sterling. Mrs. Shaner passed away June 17, 1916, and since her death Mr. Shaner had made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Patterson, at Ness City, at which place he passed away November 7, 1917. He was aged 71 years, 3 months and 4 days. Beside his three daughters he leaves seventeen grand children to mourn his loss.
Mr. Shaner was a very earnest Bible student and had committed to memory the whole of the New Testament. For several years past he had read the Bible through each year.
Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at three o’clock at the Methodist church and were conducted by the pastor, Rev. E. F. Buck assisted by Rev. Dalbey. Rev. Buck based his discourse on the text, “We all do fade as a leaf,” and spoke of the certainty of the failure of the physical powers and the inevitable physical death. He also emphasized the assurance of immortal life through faith in Jesus Christ. During the services a trio composed of O. T. Sholes, Dr. R.O.S. Shook and Carl Long sang three hymns. The comrades of Meade Post G.A.R., of which Mr. Shaner was a member, attended the service as a body. Burial was made in Cottonwood cemetery, and the pall bearers were members of the I. O. O. F. lodge.
A. J. SHANER DEATH NOTICE – STERLING KANSAS BULLETIN, 11/08/1917
Taps sounded for another of the Civil war veterans Wednesday afternoon, when Adam J. Shaner, for many years a resident of this city, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J. R. Patterson at Ness City. His death was due to paralysis. About two years ago he suffered a stroke which left him an invalid, and his condition gradually grew worse until death brought relief from suffering. After the death of his wife, which occurred a little less than a year ago, he was taken to the home of his daughter at Ness City.
Mr. Shaner served several enlistments during the Civil war, and was a member of Meade Post G.A.R. in this city. He was seventy-one years of age.
The body was brought to this city Thursday morning, and was taken to the home of his daughter, Mrs. Striplin. The funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at three o’clock at the Methodist church.
