Ora M. Shields
STERLING – Ora M. Shields, 79, died June 23, 1994 at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita.
He was born July 24, 1914, at Lebanon, the son of Milton and Elizabeth Malone Shields. He received a graduate degree and master’s degree from Emporia State Teachers College. A longtime Sterling resident, he was a retired educator and superintendent of USD 376, Sterling. He was a member of the United Methodist Church and the Rotary Club, both at Sterling, and the National Education Association. He was a veteran of World War II, having services in the United States Navy. On June 8, 1940, he married Ada Lou Forrester at Oklahoma City. She survives. Other survivors include: a son, Mark A., Marlton, N.J.; two grandsons, Bryan Shields, Houston, and Alex De Rario, Mesa, Ariz. Funeral will be a 2 p.m. Monday at Sterling United Methodist Church with the Rev.
James Graves presiding. Friends may call from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Porter-Sillin Funeral Home, Sterling, burial will be in the Sterling Community Cemetery. Memorials may be sent to the Joe Henry Golf Course or the donor’s choice, both in care of the funeral home.Family links:

Sterling – Mary Ann Shepherd, 79, died May 5, 2001, at the Ralph Thorne Care Center, Hutchinson. She was born May 24, 1921, at St. Joseph, MO, the daughter of Francis Marion ‘Frank’ and Mabel Trower Houston. A Sterling resident since 1946, she was a homemaker. She belonged to First Baptist Church,  P.E.O., and Sorosis, of Sterling. She was a past Sterling City Council and Sterling College Board of Trustees member.

On Dec. 16, 1939, she married Glen Thomas Shepherd at Sterling. He died Oct. 9, 2000.  Survivors include a daughter, Mary Kay Fritzemeier, Independence, a half-sister Bobbie Jones, Kansas City, KS, and a granddaughter.  She was preceded in death by a son, Bradley Houston Shepherd.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church, Sterling, with the Rev. H. Wayne Fink presiding. Burial will be in Sterling Community Cemetery.

Lavena Marie Shepherd

Lavena Marie Shepherd, 85, died Thursday, April 5, 2001, at Johnson.

She was born Nov. 29, 1915, at Smolan, Kansas the daughter of John H. and Blenda Nelson Miller. A resident of Sterling since 1979, moving from Manter, she was a retired cook for the Manter school system.

She was a member of the Sterling United Methodist Church, Mid-K Campers, Sun Chaser Retiree Camping Club and the Rebekah Lodge, where she was also a Past Noble Grand.

On Jan 1, 1939, she married Kenneth T. Shepherd at Smolan. He survives.

Survivors include her husband; two sons; three grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Services were at 2 p.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church, Alden, with the Rev. William Stapleton officiating. Burial was in the Sterling Community Cemetery.

He was born Nov. 18, 1913, at Alden, the son of Claud and Alta Bradley Shepherd. A longtime Sterling resident, he was a retired grain elevator manager.

He belonged to Alden United Methodist Church, I.O.O.F., Mid-K Campers, Sun Chasers Camping Club, and Manter Volunteer Fire Department.

On Jan. 1, 1939, he married Lavena Marie Miller at Smolan. She died April 5, 2001.

Survivors include: two sons; two brothers, and three grandchildren.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Alden United Methodist Church, Alden, with the Rev. William Stapleton presiding. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. today at Sillin Funeral Home, Sterling. Burial will be in Sterling Community Cemetery.

He was born Dec. 28, 1917, at Alden. the son of Claud Thomas and Alta Bradley Shepherd. A Sterling resident since 1946, he was a retired vice-president of Farmers State Bank, Sterling.

He belonged to First Baptist Church, Sterling, where he was a church deacon and trustee. He was a US. Army veteran of WW2.

On Dec. 16, 1939. he married Mary Ann Houston at Sterling. She survives.

Other survivors include a daughter. Mary Kay Fritzemeier, Independence; three brothers, Kenneth and Dale, both of Sterling. and C.T. Wichita; and a granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by a son. Bradley Houston.

Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church. Sterling, with the Rev. Herman Van Arsdale presiding. Burial will be in Sterling Community Cemetery.
