Sterling – James Dean Humphreys, 82, died Nov. 28, 2005, at Holton Community Hospital.

He was born May 14, 1923, in Sterling, the son of Thomas Arthur and Margaret Montgomery Humphreys. He graduated from Sterling High School. A resident of the Hoyt and Holton areas for the past 10 years, formerly of Sterling, he was a farmer and custom harvester.

He belonged to Reformed Presbyterian Church, Sterling.

On Aug. 20, 1954, he married Mary Eveth Hindman at Minneola. She died Nov.. 13, 2002.

Survivors include two sons, Robert, Sterling, and Thomas, Hutchinson; a daughter, Janie Schoenherr, Hoyt, and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Marjorie Myers.

Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Reformed Presbyterian Church, Sterling, with the Revs. Derek Miller and Ed Hindman presiding. Burial will be in Sterling Community Cemetery, Sterling.

Memorials may be sent to the church, in care of Sillin Funeral Home, Sterling.

Violet Ilene McNutt, 85, a resident of Sterling since 1944, died Wednesday, Dec. 21,2005, at Sterling, Presbyterian Manor.  She was born Feb. 15, 1920, at Augusta, the daughter of Charlie Henry and Mary M. Row Wolfe. She was a homemaker.

On April 8, 1936, she married Ralph McNutt Sr. at Ellinwood. He died July 5, 1979. Survivors include two sons, Earl McNutt and Larry McNutt, both of Sterling; three daughters, Mary Lu McNutt and Linda McNutt, both of Sterling, and Teri Eshandari, Phoenix, Arizona; a sister, Sophia Ingram , Tulsa, Okla.; 12 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by four sons, Ralph Jr., Tom, Russell and Jerry Ray McNutt, and two brothers, Merle Wolfe and Charles Wolfe.  Services were held Dec. 27 at Sillin Funeral Home, Sterling, with the Rev. Robert Friesen officiating. Burial was in Sterling Community Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Diabetes Association, both in care of the funeral home.

Howard Chennell, 68, Sterling native and retired news editor of the Kansas City Star, died Wednesday Sept. 3, 1997, after collapsing at his home in Fairway.

He was born in Sterling and married Norma Jean McDermed of Lyons.

He attended Sterling College and began his newspaper career on the Lyons Daily News, working there for 10 years before joining the Kansas City Times in 1959. He retired when the Star and the TImes merged in 1990.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, H.R., Evergreen, Colo., and Grahame, Palatka, Fla.; two daughters,  Elizabeth  Brewer, Ringling, Mont., and Emily Chennell, RIchmond, Va.; and three grandchildren. He was a cousin of Elizabeth Ashlock, Sterling.

A Memorial service was held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Colonial Congregational Church, Prairie Village.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church and Preceptor Delta Pi Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi, Sterling, Christ Lutheran Church, Eureka, the Midian Shrine Oriental Band-Aids and was a former Boy Scout leader.

On Aug. 13, 1998, she married Clay Thomas in Ashland.

Survivors include her husband, two sons, Kurt R. and Joshua T., and a daughter, Sara D. Thomas, all of the home; her father, Robert “Tig’ Teegardin, Eureka; a brother Gary Teegardin, Dodge City; and a sister, Beverly Welsh, Eureka.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Dorline Teegardin.

Funeral was at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church, Sterling, with the Rev. Nancy Goddard officiating. Burial was in Sterling Community Cemetery.

She was born Nov.16, 1910, near Springfield, MO, the daughter of Ed and Bessie Morris Ross. She graduated from Cleveland, Okla. High School. A longtime Sterling area resident, she was a homemaker and former cook at Sterling Grade School.  She belonged to United Methodist Church, Sterling, Triumph EHU, Rice County and Eastern Star, Sterling.

On June 7, 1930, she married Gilmer Lewis Taylor at Cleveland, Okla. He died June 15, 1961.

Survivors include a son, Billy Taylor, and wife, Betty, Sterling; a daughter-in-law, Alpha Joyce Taylor, Hutchinson, a brother, Gene Ross, Cleveland, Okla; five grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and many nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Donald Taylor and infant son, Bobby, a daughter, Delores Newell, four brothers, Walter brothers Walter, Bill, Denzil and Joseph Ross, a sister, Christabelle McCray, and a grandson, Leland Newell.

Janie Velma Harper, 90, former Sterling resident, died Sunday, Sept. 19, 2004, at Little Adventist Hospital, Littleton, Colo. She was born Sept. 30, 1913, at Nickerson, the daughter of Frank and Susie Wildin Dillon. She was a homemaker.   She married LeRoy S. Harper. He died in October of 1970.  Survivors include three children, Tom and Jim Harper and Sharon Wells, one sister, Ester Morford; 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Friday in the Sterling Community Cemetery.
