Sterling – Justin Lee Lewis, 25, died Oct. 17, 2005, at St. Francis Regional Medical Center, Wichita. He was born June 5, 1980, in Lyons, the son of Lenn and Karen Thompson Lewis. He graduated from Sterling High School in 1998. He was recognized in high school for his football and basketball abilities. A lifetime resident of Sterling, he was a chain hand for Sterling Drilling.

Survivors include his mother, Karen Lewis, Anthem, Ariz.; a brother, Jeremy Lewis, Sterling; a sister, Jenny Lewis Boop and husband, Clifton, Anthem, Ariz.; grandparents, Vaughn and Carolyn Thompson, Sterling, and Goldie Lewis, Lamar, Colo; several uncles, aunts and cousins; and his beloved dog Vinnie.

He was preceded in death by his father, Lenn Lewis; an uncle, Tom Lewis; and grandfather; Walter Lewis.  Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at United Methodist Church, Sterling, with the Revs. Nancy Goddard and Douglas Neumann presiding. The casket will remain closed. Burial will be in Sterling Community Cemetery. Memorials may be sent to Sterling High School Athletic Department.

Roy Steierl, 96, died Oct. 16, 2005, at Good Samaritan Center, Hutchinson. He was born July 4, 1907, in Sterling the son of Jacob and Anna (Stange) Steierl. He attended Jefferson Grade School and Reno County High School. He lived on a farm, north of Nickerson, until moving to Nickerson in 1980. He was a farmer and stockman, and for several years measured wheat ground for the USDA.

He belonged to Midland United Community Church of Christ, Sterling, Nickerson Chapter No. 33 Order of the Eastern Star, and was a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge and Independent Order of the Oddfellows, both of Nickerson.

On July 4, 1927, he married Bernadine Stubbs in Larned. She died Jan. 1, 2001. Survivors include a son Jerry, Sterling; a daughter Diane Detter, Winfield; two grandchildren Bradley Detter, Sterling, and Kimberly McCune, Beaumont, Texas; five great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by an infant son, a brother Ira, four sisters, Katie Huffman, Ella Frye, Dora Hauschild and Mae Warnock.

Funeral will be at Midland United Community Church of Christ, Sterling, with Pastor Robert Smith presiding. Burial will be in Sterling Community Cemetery.

Sterling – Elda May Bennett Wyatt, 88, died Monday, Oct. 31, 2005. She was born June 19, 1917, on the family farm, rural Sterling. Parents were John Logan Bennett and Kate Elizabeth ‘Libby’ Updegrove Bennett. Husband, Bob Wyatt Jr. died a year ago, Nov. 4, 2004. Elda is survived by her children: daughter, Sheryl Fulton, Topeka; daughter Carol Kruse and husband, Lonnie, Serling; daughter, Becky Frederick and husband, John, Little Rock, Ark.; son Kent Wyatt and wife, Diane, Abilene; a sister, Alma Fair, Alden; 32 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren.

Elda loved music and playing the marimba. She was in a national marimba orchestra, which played in Chicago in the early forties. Elda traveled to Anchorage, Alaska, in 1942, to marry Bob Wyatt Jr. In 1961, they moved back to Sterling so Bob could help run Peoples Savings and Loan. Elda became very busy with her family, her church work, Girl Scouts and later worked at First National Bank. But she always had time to grow a big garden each summer.

Memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Sterling United Presbyterian Church. There will be a private family burial service in the Sterling Community Cemetery.

Lillian M. Hobble, 99, passed away Tuesday, March 28, 2006, at Aldersgate Village in Topeka. The daughter of Al & Greta Gosch, she was born on a homestead in Rice County on March 11, 1907. She married Otto K. Hobble on June 3, 1936, near Lyons, Kansas. He died on September 28, 1983. Lillian is survived by a daughter, Anita Miller and her husband, Ross, of Topeka; two grandchildren, Dr. Kyle Miller and his wife, Tammy, of Topeka, Dr. Amy Miller of Boston, MA; and two great- grandsons, Tyler and Cole Miller, of Topeka. Services will be Saturday, April 1, at Sterling United Presbyterian Church. A memorial fund has been established at the Sterling United Presbyterian Church in her name. Sillin Funeral Home, Sterling, KS, is in charge of funeral arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Lori Miller Varney, of the home; daughter, Kiley Varney, Hesston; his mother, Ruth Varney Lyons; two stepsons, Adrick and Brody Miller, both of Lyons; a stepdaughter, Casha Miller, Lyons; a sister Joleen Larkin, Lyons; three nieces; and two great-nieces.  He was preceded in death by his father.

Funeral will be a 2 p.m. Thursday at Sillin Funeral Home, Lyons, with the Rev. Bill Runyan presiding. Visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Sterling Community Cemetery.  Memorials may be sent to Rose Memorial Scholarship Fund in care of the funeral home.

On July 2, 1938, she married Harold Neal in Sterling. He died Aug. 27, 2003.  Survivors include a son, Jim Neal and wife Marcia, Newton; two daughters, Pat McClellan, Topeka and Jackie Krueger and husband, Duane, Sterling. 10 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild

She was preceded in death by three brothers, (her twin)Donald, Jim and Dwight Buel; and three sisters, Virginia Buel, Helen McMurphy and an infant sister.  Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at United Methodist Church, Sterling, with the Rev. Robert Carol McAllaster, 74, of Horton, Kansas, passed away April 7, 2006, at his home in rural Horton. Robert was born on November 15, 1931, in Geneseo, Kansas, the son of Guy Carey & Altha Margaret Brayton McAllaster. Robert graduated from Sterling High School in 1951 and from the Wichita, Kansas Venus Academy in 1954. He married Sue Carolyn Henry in Sterling, Kansas, on August 22, 1954. Robert worked as a hairdresser in the Horton and Newton, Kansas areas before becoming a livestock trader. He served during the Korean Conflict in the U.S. Army and was a member of the American Legion, VFW, and a former member of the Kansas State Cosmetology Assc., Kansas Hair Fashion Committee and the Newton Elks Lodge. Survivors include his wife, Sue McAllaster of the home, two daughters, Teresa & husband John Hammersmith, Brenda & husband Walter Honea both of Horton, Kansas, son, Robert C. Sterling – Lex Milburn Gill, 80, died March 10, 2006, at Hutchinson Hospital. He was born Aug. 9, 1925, in Sylvia, the son of Carl Elmer and Edith Ankerholz Gill. He graduated in 1943 from Sylvia High School. A resident of Sterling, he was a retired corrosion technician for Michigan-Wisconsin Pipeline. He belonged to United Methodist Church, American Legion, Sterling Country Club, and the Masonic Lodge, all in Sterling, and the Moose Lodge, Hutchinson. He served in the U.S. Marines during World War II. On June 8, 1947, he married Doris M. Frederick in Sterling. She survives.

Other survivors include three sons, Dan Wesley, Lyons, Lance David, Abilene, and Ronald Todd, Nickerson; a brother, Dwain G. Gill, Sylvia; a sister, Lila Reynolds, Hutchinson; six grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by a sister, Laveda Ukens.

Burial in Sterling Community Cemetery, with military graveside rites, conducted by the American Legion Post No. 128. Memorials to the American Diabetes Association, in care of the funeral home.

On Feb.7, 1938, she married Charles R. Carder. They later divorced. On Oct.7, 1947 she married Robert P. Altland, Jr. in Sterling. He died June 23, 1978,

Survivors include a daughter Susan Mae Ackley and her husband Dennis, Lee’s Summit, Mo.; a daughter-in-law, Priscilla Carder; Sterling; a sister, Lucille Hill, Topeka; four grandchildren, Douglas Carder; Robert Carder; Ted Carder and Ashley Ross; and eight great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by a son, Charles Robert ‘Chuck’ Carder.

She was born Oct. 15, 1903, in Sterling, the daughter of William and Anna Forwalder Yates. A lifetime Sterling resident, she was a homemaker and was a salesperson for 17 years.

She belonged to the United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Gleaner’s Sunday School Class and Order of the Eastern Star, serving as Past Matron, all in Sterling.

On June 5, 1921, she married Ernest R. Langel in Lyons. He died May 31, 1977.

Survivors include a daughter Karen Langel Keo, Clarksville, Tenn.; three grandchildren, William Warren Jr., James Warren and Connie Coultas, and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Delores Langel Warren, a brother, Jasper Yates, and three sisters, Eva Alber, Ethyl Stubbs and Verna Langel.

Funeral will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at United Methodist Church, Sterling, with the Rev. Nancy Goddard presiding. Visitation will be from 2-7 p.m. Monday at Sillin Funeral Home, Sterling. Burial will be in Sterling Community Cemetery.
