Howard Chennell, 68, Sterling native and retired news editor of the Kansas City Star, died Wednesday Sept. 3, 1997, after collapsing at his home in Fairway.
He was born in Sterling and married Norma Jean McDermed of Lyons.
He attended Sterling College and began his newspaper career on the Lyons Daily News, working there for 10 years before joining the Kansas City Times in 1959. He retired when the Star and the TImes merged in 1990.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, H.R., Evergreen, Colo., and Grahame, Palatka, Fla.; two daughters, Elizabeth Brewer, Ringling, Mont., and Emily Chennell, RIchmond, Va.; and three grandchildren. He was a cousin of Elizabeth Ashlock, Sterling.
A Memorial service was held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Colonial Congregational Church, Prairie Village.
