    Helen F. Osenbaugh, 96, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa formerly of Hutchinson, Wellington, and Sterling, Kansas died Monday December 9, 2013. Eastern Star services and internment will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday at the Sterling Community Cemetery Chapel by Silver Leaf O.E.S. Chapter 464 and Queen Esther O.E.S. Chapter 32, Friends may call from 10:00 AM until Noon on Friday at the Buhler Mortuary in Buhler, Kansas and at the cemetery chapel after 1:30 PM on Friday.

    Survivors include a son Ralph (Karen) of Cedar Rapids, five grandchildren Amy (Corey) Brinkmeyer of Cedar Rapids, Mark Osenbaugh of Marion; Jeff and Matt Osenbaugh, and Laurie (Kyle) Campbell all of Hutchinson, Kansas; three great grandchildren Graham and Mitchell Brinkmeyer, and Alyssa Campbell; an estranged son Glenn plus many nieces , nephews , a host of friends. She was preceded in death by her husband Troy, 5brothers,and 4 sisters.

    Helen was born on September 3, 1917 in Sterling, Kansas the daughter of John Ralph and Nellie Hallock Bunn. She graduated from Serling High School in 1935. She married Troy S. Osenbaugh on January 2, 1943 in Sterling, Kansas. Troy passed away in 1977. Helen was an avid quilter, enjoyed sewing and especially the time spent with her beloved family and many friends. In lieu of flowers memorials may be sent to the Helen Osenbaugh Memorial Fund in care of Buhler Mortuary, Buhler, Kansas.

A member of First Broad Street United Methodist Church, Loretta enjoyed church and Sunday school friends. Loretta retired in 2000 from Federal Service after a career in finance and serving the country as a military wife supporting her husband’s Air Force career. She was preceded in death by her husband, Verlin; her parents, Willie and Ethel Revel; six sisters; and one brother. Her memberships included: Catholic Faith, Sterling Alumni Association and Relay for Life Committee Member. On July 28, 1994, she married Larry Donley in Kingman. Survivors include her husband, Larry of the home; two sons, Justin and Vanessa Zambo of Shawnee, and Ryan and Bridgette Zambo of Sterling; a daughter, Casie and Scott Powell of North Newton; a brother, Richard “Dick” and Laura Renollet of Myrtle Beach, SC; and eight grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Drew M. Ekhart, the son of Dale Benton and Jan Kay (Wilton) Ekhart, was born on March 9, 1977 in Imperial, Nebraska. He passed away on May 28, 2013 at Rice County District Hospital, in Lyons, Kansas at the age of 36 years. Drew was a graduate of Superior High School with the class of 1995 and Concordia University, Seward, Nebraska, receiving a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration Management. He was Vice-President of Alden State Bank for 10 years.He was united in marriage to Melissa Frees on June 12, 2004, and to this union three children were born. Boston, Eckley and Faith.

He was preceded in death by his Maternal Grandparents, Clarence and Ruby Wilton.

He is survived by his wife, Melissa J. Ekart; 2 Sons, Boston Drew Ekart, Eckley Dylan Ekart; Daughter, Faith Isabelle Ekart, all of the home; Mother, Jan & Bernie Leece, Webber, Ks.; Father, Dale & Anna Ekart, Berthoud, Co.; Brother, Todd & Tami Ekart, Sidney, NE.; 5 Sisters, Jill & Ross Wurdeman, Krynn & Sam Larsen both of Columbus, NE., Sarah Ekart, Tampa, Fl., Amy Ekart, Boston, MA., Emily & Casey Stevens, Berthoud, Co.; Paternal Grandparents, Jackie & Dona June Ekart, Imperial, NE., Numerous Aunts & Uncles; Several Nieces & Nephews.

John William Spotts, 56, of Kingman and formerly of Sterling, Kan., and New Orleans, died of complications from oral cancer on June 25, 2008, in Kingman.

John was born April 9, 1952, in Sterling, Kan., the son of the Rev. Dr. Alfred and Jean Creswell Spotts. He grew up in Sterling and graduated from Sterling High School in 1970. John graduated from Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Fla., and earned a master’s degree in business from Tulane University in New Orleans, La. He was a certified public accountant.

John moved to Kingman in 1992 where he resided until his death. In 2002, he went through extensive surgery for oral cancer. He was an active participant in the Kingman Cancer Society, encouraging others in their cancer struggles. In 2005, he traveled to Kansas to participate in a cancer survivor relay with his mother.

He appreciated antiques, plants, following sports, golf and being with his friends and family. He was witty, intelligent and endearing. All who knew and loved him will miss him.

He is survived by his parents, the Rev. Dr. Alfred and Jean Spotts of Colorado; his brothers and sisters, the Rev. Al Spotts and wife Maggie Steptoe of Louisville, Ky., Ann Haspels and husband Chuck of Cortez, Colo., Andy of Chicago, Jim of Mariposa, Calif., Jan Spotts and husband Jim McHenry of Houston, and Tim of Concord, Calif. He also had 10 nieces and nephews and a grandniece and nephew. Joe Spotts of Glenwood, Iowa, recently preceded him in death.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Montezuma Valley Presbyterian Church in Cortez, Colo.

Lyle D. Renollet, 65, died May 17, 2013 at Hospice House in Hutchinson, KS.  He was born July 21, 1947 at Sterling the son of Roy & Anna Belle Fenwick Renollet.  He was a lifetime Sterling resident.  He retired from the Sterling Farmers Coop Union after 35 years.

He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church of Sterling, Lions Clubs of Sterling and Lyons and the American Bowling Congress.

He is survived by four brothers, Roy Renollet Jr. of Skiatook, Okla., Rod Renollet of Hutchinson, Gene Renollet of Platte City, Mo. and Bob Renollet of Lyons.  16 Nieces and nephews, many great nieces and nephews and several great-great-nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Henry, sister-in-law Joy and niece Tammi Laverantz.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, May 22, 2013 at the United Presbyterian Church in Sterling with Rev. Seth Svaty officiating.  Burial will be in the Sterling Community Cemetery.

STERLING – Mary Alice Johnson, 91, passed away April 24, 2013, in Leawood. She was born Aug. 18, 1921, in McCracken, to Samuel and Della VanWarmer Skinner. Having moved to Sterling as a young girl she attended the local grade school and high school. Later in life she received her Associates Degree from Hutchinson Community Junior College.

On Aug. 10, 1941, she married Cecil J. Johnson at the church parsonage in Nickerson. They began their life on a farm east of Sterling, where she resided until her recent stay at Grace Gardens Assisted Living Facility.

In addition to her duties as a farm wife, she gave piano lessons to many Rice and Reno County children. For sixty years she helped with all aspects of music at Midland Community Church, primarily playing the piano and organ for worship services.

Through the years she was a member of Sterling Music Club, Midland Lucky Clovers 4-H Club leader, Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), organized the maiden chapter of Children of the American Revolution (CAR) in Sterling, volunteered at the Sterling Presbyterian Manor, and was active in Midland Church Women’s Fellowship. She belonged to countless bridge clubs in Sterling, Nickerson and Hutchinson.

Preceding her in death were her son, First Lieutenant Phil David Johnson in 1969;  her husband, Cecil J. Johnson, Nov. 2, 2002; and sister, Gail Wilkey, Feb. 7, 2010, all of Sterling.

Survivors include: daughters, Nancy and husband Mitch Borota, Leawood, Mary Jo and husband Doug Cress, Sterling, Colo.; grandchildren, J.J. and husband Jerry Schenkelberg, Omaha, Neb., Bret Borota and wife Sarah, Overland Park, Emily Cress, Kansas City; great-grandchildren, Stryker J. and Tori J. Schenkelberg, Omaha, Neb., and Brooks Borota, Overland Park; sister, Nancy Ann Oat, Norwich, Conn.; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, May 3, 2013, at Midland United Church of Christ, rural Sterling, with burial to follow in Sterling Cemetery. Revs. Will Best and Judy Conners will be officiating. Visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m. Thursday, May 2, 2013, with the family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m. at Birzer Funeral Home, Sterling. Memorials may be sent to the Midland United Church of Christ or your local hospice, in care of the funeral home.
