He joined the Reformed Presbyterian Church as a young man and was a life-long member. He attended Jr. High School and High School in Topeka before his family moved to Sterling, Kansas, where he finished high school and graduated from Sterling College. He was a five-sport letterman while in college. He graduated from college in 1951, was inducted into the Army that summer, and married his high school sweetheart, Roberta Dill, while en-route to Korea that same year. They remained devoted and much in love for 60 years and raised three children. In retirement, he served a year in Taiwan as Consultant to the President of Christ’s College and later spent a term in Cyprus as Headmaster of the American Academy in Nicosia. Joe was active in both church and community affairs throughout his life. Many of his activities have been chronicled in his autobiography, My Time on the Clock: The Shaping of a College President. Remarkably fit until late in life, he officiated high school and college football games for 50 years, and was inducted into the Topeka Official’s Association Hall of Fame in 2010. He made his first parachute jump at age 70 and his second at age 80; was Tri-state Senior Olympic Champion in the javelin; and claimed a hole-in-one in golf. Edgar, Howard Metheny ‘Red’

Edgar, Howard Metheny ‘Red’

husband of Cora Elizabeth ‘Betty'(Kensett)

Burial Date: 2014,  01/18                 Age:91              Lot: 960 H  Cremains

US Marines      WW2

Howard Metheny Edgar, 91, Hutchinson, KS, passed away Tuesday, November 19,  2013 in Topeka, KS.

Howard was born March 9, 1922 on the family farm near Sterling, KS, the son of Metheny and Isabel Dougherty Edgar. He had eight siblings: Margaret, Ralph, Donald, Jean, Alice, Alvin, and Mary; all deceased. The youngest, Carol survives. In 1922 they had no running water, electricity, or telephone. Life was hard. Ralph died in a farming accident at 19. Alvin drowned at a family picnic, only 13 years old.

Howard attended a one room country school in the early years and went into town for high school. He graduated from Sterling High School in 1939, and started Sterling College that fall. There he was nicknamed Red on account of his red hair.

In 1942 he put his classes on hold and enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. He spent World War I1 in the South Pacific, assigned to squadron VMF(AW)114. In 1944 Howard was at Battle of Peleliu. The casualty rate there was the highest for U.S. military personnel of any battle in the Pacific War.

After the war Howard returned to Sterling and resumed his studies. It was a good thing he did. He graduated in 1948. More importantly, he met Cora Elizabeth “Betty” Kensett and fell in love. On August 27th, 1949 they were married in Parsons, KS. Betty survives.

In 1950,following training in St. Louis, Howard and Betty moved to Hutchinson, KS. Howard worked as a medical technologist for Saint Elizabeth’s Hospital, Lettner, Hinshaw and Shaw Laboratory, and Hutchinson Hospital.

Howard and Betty raised four children in their home, 26 Wheatland Drive, the home they purchased in 1955. David moved to Wichita, KS, and married Janna Decker (deceased). They had four children: Jessica (married to Mark Hopkins), Justina, Jennifer, and Josh. Elizabeth Ann moved to Topeka, KS and married Bob Fincham. They had four children: Ethan, Lindsey, Elizabeth, and Jessie (deceased). Steven moved to Queens, NY, and married Marisa Gomez-Mozo. They had two boys: Ian and Dante. James moved to Manhattan, KS and married Libby Beddingfield. They have one son, Sterling.

Howard was raised in a Christian home. His was a life-long faith walk with God. He lived his Christianity in a humble way, showing his faith through his actions. He was eager to assist those in need, and always sympathetic to the struggle of others. Patient, tolerant, understanding, and accepting – that’s how you’d describe Howard. He was active in The First Presbyterian Church of Hutchinson where he was an elder. His record of attendance was unsurpassed.

Howard delighted in sharing his life with family, friends, and neighbors, laughing together during the good times, giving his help when needed, and encouraging big dreams. He enjoyed woodworking (including toys) and refinishing furniture, which he frequently gave away. He was remarkably independent and ingeniously resourceful, always finding ways to fix the broken. Ever looking for an excuse to spend time out of doors, he loved fishing, gardening, grilling, and making ice cream out back.

Howard was a big supporter of Blue Dragon Basketball, of Hutchinson Community college. He often attended with sisters Jean and Alice.

His life was filled with adventures and love. He will be greatly missed.

Howard was cremated. A memorial ceremony and inurnment will take place at a later date. Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel is assisting the family.

Memorial contributions may be made either to Sterling College,125 W. Cooper, Sterling, KS 67579 or First Presbyterian Church, 201 E Sherman St, Hutchinson, KS 67501.

Edgar, Cora Elizabeth ‘Betty’ (Kensett)

Edgar, Cora Elizabeth ‘Betty’ (Kensett)

wife of Howard Metheny Edgar

Burial Date:  2014,   06/16     Age: 87      Lot: 960 F

Cora Elizabeth (Betty) Kensett was born on March 3, 1927 in Sabetha, Kansas. Her father, James W. Kensett, Sr., was a school principal, and her mother, Cora Kensett (née Rose), was a sometimes teacher for the public schools. She also taught piano and sang professionally. Betty had a brother Dr. James W. Jr. three years her senior. After a change in career, James settled the family in Parsons, Kansas. Betty graduated from Parsons High School in 1945.

Betty attended and graduated from Sterling College (1950) after initially attending the University of Kansas. There she met Howard Edgar, her future husband who was also a SC student. Howard and Betty were wed August 27, 1949. They were a loving couple and a good team. Their union lasted 64 years until Howard’s passing in November 2013.

In 1950 they moved to Hutchinson, Kansas when Howard secured a job at St Elizabeth’s Hospital as a medical technician. In 1955, the family moved to a brand new house at 26 Wheatland Drive, Hutchinson, where Betty lived for the rest of her life.

It was a traditional family; Betty was the homemaker. She did the shopping, cooking, cleaning, laundry, tending to the children and all the rest. She was quite busy, but very organized, serving three meals a day – always on time with rare exception. She found time to sew, making clothes for the children and even Ken and Barbie. In nice weather she’d tend to her flowers out back.

Betty took her role as mother seriously – teacher, nurse, chauffer, and student. She was leader of Ann’s Girl Scout troop for a number of years. Betty loved music, playing piano, and singing just like her own mother. She passed that love on to her children. She took art classes with Hutch Recreation and encouraged her kids to be creative as well. She taught them to be independent and able to take care of themselves, be considerate of others, and to never waste anything.

Betty was a life-long member of the Presbyterian Church. She attended the 1st Presbyterian Church in Hutchinson, nearly every Sunday where she made many friends and was involved in its many functions.

Betty exercised all her life. As a youth, she played tennis and swam on a regular basis. She followed Jack La Lanne from early on. In her later years, she did water aerobics and participated in exercise sessions at church.

Betty left this earth on May 26, 2014. May she rest in peace.

Survivors include Betty’s children, David Wilson Edgar (Wichita, KS), Elizabeth Ann Fincham (Topeka, KS), Steven Kensett Edgar (Long Island City, NY), Dr. James Howard Edgar (Manhattan, KS) Betty had eleven grandchildren.

Memorial service will be held on Monday June 16 at the 1st Presbyterian Church in Hutchinson 11:00AM. All are welcome.
