Hutchinson News, 12/9/1935: One Hutchinson Woman Victim Of the Crash Four persons, one a Hutchinson woman, were killed near Belpre at 4:55 o’clock yesterday afternoon when their car was struck by a fast Santa Fe mail train. Five other persons were injured in crashes in Hutchinson and vicinity last night and yesterday. Victims of the railroad accident were: Mrs. Rosannah Jane Blaine, 66, 515 Ave. B east, a Rice county pioneer. Mr. and Mrs. J.D. Asher, St. John, an elderly couple who operated a tourist camp. Mrs. Ella Smith of Larned, a twin sister of Mrs. Asher. All died Instantly.
The four were killed instantly when their car was struck by westbound train No. 7 at the crossing about a mile east of Belpre. Bodies of Mr. Asher, who was driving, and Mrs. Blaine were found in the front seat of the demolished automobile. The sisters were thrown a considerable distance form the wreck. The locomotive was not damaged. Mr. and Mrs. Asher were pioneers of the region and Mr. Asher was an extensive landowner. Mrs. Blaine was a house guest of the Ashers and had gone with them to Mrs. Smith’s home at Larned to take her to the Asher home for a Sunday visit. They approached the crossing, which Santa Fe officials here said is an open one, from the north. Here Part of Time Mrs. Blaine was the daughter of the late Rev. W.L. Hinshaw, pioneer Sterling minister. Born in Indiana, she came to Kansas at the age of two. After the death of her first husband, J.N. Stark, she married Jess Blaine in 1910. Since Mr. Blaine’s death two years ago, she has been making her home in Los Angeles and with her daughter, Mrs. Ruth Stark Johnson, 515 Ave. B. east. Mrs. Blaine is survived by two other children, Mrs. Matilda E. Bluser, Los Angeles, and David L. Stark, Hot Springs, Ark.; two sisters, Mr. A.M. McKee and Mrs. C.A. Stone, Sterling; four brothers, J.H. Hinshaw, Hutchinson, D.J. Hinshaw, Yuma, Ariz., Dr. J. D. Hinshaw, Canon City, Col., and A.R. Benjamin Arthur Blades was born 07 September 1885 near Sterling, Kansas. He was a resident of Sterling all his life. He died May 1904 at his home in Sterling, Kansas. A sister preceded him in death. Survivors included his parents Frank Shelby and Idella Daniels Blades; three brothers Frank Sandys, William Cornelius and Andrew Jackson; two sisters Zella and Rose May.
Ben Blades, the 17-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. F.S. Blades died at the home of his parents last Thursday night. He has long been a sufferer from apoplexy, and a complication of grip and pneumonia for five weeks previous to his death was too much for his constitution. The family has the sympathy of many friends in this, their second bereavement within six months.

Idella ‘Della’ Blades died 31 December 1903 at her home in Sterling, Kansas. She was born 19 October 1880 near Sterling, Kansas. She was a resident of Sterling all her life and graduated from Sterling High School 18 May 1900 and attended Cooper College in Sterling. She taught in the Sterling public schools. Survivors included her parents Frank Shelby and Idella Daniels Blades; four brothers Frank Sandys, William Cornelius, Benjamin Arthur and Andrew Jackson; two sisters Zella and Rose Mary.
Miss Della Blades, who was an ex-student of Cooper, died at the home of pneumonia and was buried on New Years Day. She taught in the city schools until the Friday before Christmas. Her sickness was not of long duration but it ended fatally.
We regret the death of Della Blades, a former student of Cooper, and a teacher in the Sterling public schools. She was a good student and a good teacher.

Death of Mrs. Blades – – Sadness has again come to the home of the sexton of our cemetery, F. S. Blades. In the early morning hours of Friday, November 21st, his wife passed away at the home place on North Sixth street. For eight weeks she had been bedfast, her death being caused by a tumor. A son and one daughter had previously been taken from them, leaving now three boys and two girls, besides the husband. Deceased was a first cousin of S.R. Daniels, who is, also a resident of this city. She was born January 11th, 1861, in Sciota County, Ohio, and married Mr. Blades in ’79. Rev. Ira Bundy conducted a short funeral service at the house last Friday evening at 7:30 and the remains laid to rest Saturday morning at 8:30 besides those children who had preceded her to the better land. Many friends of the bereaved extend sympathy at this hour.
Survivors include her husband Frank Shelby of Sterling, Kansas; three sons Frank Sandys, William Cornelius and Andrew Jackson; two daughters Zella and Rose Mary.

Excerpt: Mr. Blades was born in Dover, Mason County, Kentucky, January 13, 1844 and was aged seventy three years ten months and twenty-four days of age at the time of his death. When a lad thirteen years of age he moved with his parents from Kentucky to Missouri. In 1862 he responded to the call of his country and enlisted in the Civil war as a member of Company B, 3rd Missouri Cavalry, and served until the end of the war. Later he enlisted with the regular army and gave his services to his country in the Indian warfare, where he showed much daring and bravery.
In his early manhood he became a member of the Masonic fraternity and for forty years was connected with the lodge in this city. He was the sexton of Cottonwood cemetery for 23 years but on account of his failing health gave the position over to other hands in August 1916.
Mr. Blades was married January 9, 1879, to Miss Idella Daniels of this city who preceded him in death three years ago. He is survived by four children, Misses Zella and Rose of this city, and A.J. and Sandys who are in the west.” Two sons Benjamin and William and one daughter, Della, passed away several years ago.

For most of his life Jay was a farmer, but did spend time helping his father with his sawmill and Blacksmith business. He married Cinthia Thompson, daughter of Buckner Thompson and Eliza Virginia Staggs on 16 Oct 1883 in Canton, Lewis, Missouri. Cinthia died sometime before 1890,(No record found of her death), and it appears they had no children. Jahile remarried on 6 Aug 1890 to Mrs Sarah Jane Simpson, young widow of James Vincent Simpson and daughter of David Musser and Rebecca Frazier at her father’s home in Lewis County, Missouri. They had three daughters and five sons. Sarah Jane died in Sterling, Kansas in 1913, After her death, Jay moved around quite a bit, living in Missouri, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma and San Diego, California until finally he lived in Patton, California. where he died.

Sylvester Bennett was the son of Rev. John Bennett, who was pastor for fifty years of Bloom Baptist church, South Webster, Ohio, and united with the church at the age of twenty. Removed his membership to the first Baptist church of Sterling of which he was a member at the time of his death.
Died May 24, 1912, ages 83 years and four days.
