She was born Aug. 5, 1920, in Bristol, Colo., the daughter of Benjamin and Beda Ida Bogue White. A longtime Sterling resident, she was a homemaker, wife, mother and she attended Sterling College. Her memberships included: United Methodist Church, WSCS, former church Choir member, Get Together Club and M.B. Club, all of Sterling and she was a former Sweet Adelines member. On July 4, 1941, she married W. J. Oden in Garden City. He passed away Nov. 4, 1977. Survivors include: son, Jim and Tamie Oden of Houston, Texas; daughter, Barbara and Frank Lovitch of Basehor, Kan.; sister, Betty Watters of Washington; six grandchildren, Kendra, Heather, Leslie, Aaron, Matt and Zach; seven great-grandchildren, Rylan, Caden, Erin, Kenna, Landon, Sloane and George. She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Ellen Cobb; sister, Jody Newby; three brothers, Briggs White, Fagan White, Ward White. Funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday, May 3, 2014, at United Methodist Church, Sterling, with Reverend Marvin Ewertt officiating. Burial will be in the Sterling Community Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Friday, May 2, 2014, at Birzer Funeral Home, Sterling. Memorials may be made to the Veteran Memorial at Sterling Lake, in care of the funeral home. Carla McConnelee, 71, died Oct. 4, 2010, at Harry Hynes Hospice in Wichita, Kan. She was born June 25, 1939, to Carl and Adelaide Carver Mershon. She graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1957 and from Sterling College in 1961. She was a retired teacher and enjoyed music and travel. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and American Guild of Organists. She married Bill McConnelee Aug. 9, 1962, in Hutchinson, Kan. He survives. Other survivors include: son, Carl and wife Cindy of Bedford, Va.; two daughters, Cathy Pohlman and husband Aaron of Hutchinson, and Cynthia Smith and husband Scott of Shoreline, Wash.; and seven grandchildren. Funeral service is 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, 2010, at the First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Amy Dame officiating. Burial at Sterling Cemetery, Sterling, Kan. Friends may call 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and Friday, with family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson.

In 1886 he married his second wife, Harriett Margaret Mitchell. Mr. McCandless was employed on the Santa Fe section. H e developed pneumonia and died on December 12, 1910, at the home of his son on West Jefferson St. in Sterling, at the age of 55.
