STERLING – Anita Whealy Oden, 99, died April 12, 2011, at Presbyterian Manor, Sterling. She was born Jan. 18, 1912, on a farm near Wellington, Kan., to Arthur Caldwell and Elizabeth Lynn Hartley Whealy. She was a longtime Sterling resident and a homemaker. She graduated from Wellington High School, received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Pittsburg State Teachers College in Art Interior Design. Memberships included: First United Methodist Church with the Women’s outstanding service pin, AAUW, 50-year member of Order of Eastern Star, MB Club, and the Sterling Sorosis.

She married Wilmer “Bud” H. Oden March 2, 1934, in Miami, Okla. He died Dec. 13, 2004. Survivors include: son, Bob and Judy Oden of Shawnee Mission; daughter, Fira Stout and daughter-in-law, Jan Oden, both of Sterling; eight grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; son, A.H. Oden; son-in-law, Ron Stout; grandson, Doug Stout; two sisters, Ramona Weible and Mary Gartman; and brother, Bud Whealy.

Funeral 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 21, 2011, at the First United Methodist Church, Sterling, with Reverend Marvin Ewertt officiating. Burial in Sterling Community Cemetery, Sterling. Visitation 9:30 a.m. to service time Thursday at the church.

Memorials to The Buddy Oden Scholarship Fund, Bell Choir Fund or First United Methodist Church, in care of Birzer Funeral Home, Sterling.

STERLING – Debbie Ochs was born Nov. 18, 1949, at Camp Le Jeune, NC, to Joe D. and Joyce Newbold Reavis. She died on April 29, 2014, at Presbyterian Manor, Sterling.

On March 23, 1968, she married Daniel C. Ochs Jr. in Hutchinson, Kan. He died July 9, 2010. She graduated from Nickerson High School in 1967 and attended Hutchinson Community College. She belonged to the First United Methodist Church in Sterling, was involved in Bible School with her husband for many years and retired from the Hutchinson Correctional Facility. Survivors include: sons, and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her mother, Joyce Bennett, and her father, Joe Reavis.

Cremation has taken place. Graveside Service will be 11 a.m. Friday, May 2, 2014, at Sterling Community Cemetery, with Reverend Marvin Ewertt officiating. Memorials may be made to American Diabetes Association, United Methodist Church of Sterling or St. Jude’s Hospital, in care of Birzer Funeral Home, Sterling.

STERLING – Daniel C. Ochs Jr., 63, died July 9, 2010, at Promise Regional Medical Center, Hutchinson, Kan. He was born Sept. 26, 1946, in Hutchinson, Kansas, to Daniel C. and Doris Cook Ochs Sr. He was a Sterling resident for 18 years, formerly of Hutchinson. He was a small business owner of two gas stations, a truck driver and worked for Longfellow Foundations. He graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1964. He was a member of United Methodist Church, Sterling, Teamsters Union, and Habitat for Humanity volunteer. He was U.S. Army veteran serving during the Vietnam War, receiving a Purple Heart.On March 23, 1968, he married Debbie Reavis in Hutchinson. Survivors include: his wife, Debbie, of the home; three sons, Daniel C. “Danno” Ochs III and wife Alicia, Hutchinson, Jeremy Ochs, Gainesville, Texas, and Ryan Ochs and wife Mandy, Sterling, Kan.; two sisters, Margaret Burkhart, Conway Springs, Kan., and Mary Wallsten, Hutchinson; four grandsons, Brady Ochs, Daniel C.
