George H. Bruer

Sylvia – George H. Bruer, 64, died Friday while stopping overnight at the Leon Hotel, Hutchinson. Born April 23, 1900, at Sterling, he married Velma Underwood who died in 1949. A former resident of Kingman, he was a retired lineman for the Ark Valley Electrical Cooperative. He lived at Sylvia six months.

Harold Bruer Buried Here Monday

George Harold Bruer, 64, Sylvia, son of Mrs. Josephine Bruer, died Friday at the Leon Hotel, Hutchinson, where he had stopped overnight. Mr. Bruer was born April 25, 1901 at Sterling and married Velma Underwood, who died in 1949.

Death was due to a heart attack. Mr. Bruer, a former resident of Kingman, had lived in Sylvia six months. He was a retired lineman for the Ark Valley Electrical Co-operative. He was a member of the Lyle Rishel American Legion Post, Hutchinson and a Veteran of World War I.

Harold attended the Sterling schools and spent the early part of his life here. He is believed to be the youngest man of World War I. He became sixteen an April 25, 1917, and enlisted in Hutchinson on the following day. He was a student in Sterling High School at the time. He served for a time at Kelly Field in San Antonio and was en route to France when the Armistice was signed.

At one time Harold and his wife had five boys in military service.

Survivors include four daughters, Ann Bruer, Santa Maria, Calif.; Mrs. Lyle McKinney, Arlington; Mrs. Wallace Zimmerman, Hutchinson; and Mrs. Ed Gattis, Scottsboro, Ala.; six sons, Joseph, Sylvia; John, Arlington; George, Olympia, Wash.; Rodger, Los Angeles; Martin, Leavenworth; and Sylvester, Missouri; mother, Mrs. Josephine Bruer, and one brother, Ellery, Sterling.

Funeral services were held Monday at 2:00 p.m. at Johnson and Sons Chapel, Hutchinson with Rev. Francis Long officiating. Burial was in Sterling Community Cemetery.

The George Brownlee family moved to Sterling in 1965 from a farm southwest of Sylvia in Reno County.  Both George and his wife, Carol Gene (English), attended Sterling College in the late 1930s and early 1940s, and Carol Gene was on the faculty for 1946-1953, when she resigned to become a farm wife. After returning to Sterling, Carol Gene served a faculty member and administrator until her retirement in 1986.   George worked at the college in the maintenance department and later as Business Manager until his death in 1972.  CGB

William Brown, the transient who was killed a few weeks ago when he fell from a fence and broke his neck was buried Tuesday afternoon of this week in the potter’s field in the Sterling Community Cemetery. Services were conducted at the cemetery by Rev. Spear.

The body has been held all this time in the hope that some relatives or friends would hear of his death, identify the man and arrange for burial.

It will be remembered that the deceased had been working for James Buel on the farm and fell from the fence, breaking his neck. He was brought to the Sterling hospital and lived until the following evening. Although he remained conscious until the very last, he died without disclosing his identity or giving any clue to his home of family.  Sterling Bulletin, 1927,  05/26.
