Mr.  Brown was born in Patterson, N. J. and from there went to Clarinda, Iowa. Soon after, when the war broke our, he enlisted at a the age of 18 years, in the 1st Nebraska cavalry, and afterwards re-enlisted, in the war. He saw a great deal of service, was in the battle of Shiloh, and at the close of the rebellion fought Indians for several years. He was mustered out July 1, 1866.

Mr. Brown was married twice, there being five surviving children by the first wife. Six years ago he was married to Jennie Glaze, who survives him. Since his 21st year he has been a member of the United Presbyterian church, and has always been an active Christian worker.
