Kathleen Ann “Kathy” Peters, 65, died May 31, 2012, at Harry Hynes Hospice in Wichita. She was born December 23, 1946, in Hutchinson, to Robert and Marguerite Clark Misner. Kathy graduated from Nickerson High School, was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and worked at Wal-Mart as a cashier for 22 years.Kathy is survived by: her sister, Eileen Neuman and husband Paul of Ellsworth; children, Phyllis Hoover and husband David of Hutchinson, John Abildgaard and wife Denise of Chicago, Shelly Bird and husband Doug of Colwich; grandchildren, Kelsey, Jordyn, Hunter, all of Colwich; and Molly, her great companion and loving dog.She was preceded in death by her parents.Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 7, 2012, at Elliott Mortuary Chapel, Hutchinson, with Pastor Henry J. Hartman officiating. Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Wednesday, with family to greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Elliott Mortuary. Burial will be in Sterling Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Prairie Vista Animal Clinic, or to the Children’s Miracle Network, both in care of the mortuary. If you knew Kathy Peters, then you knew how much she loved all creatures.”She had a big heart for animals,” said Debbie Yutzy, who became a close friend of Peters through the Prairie Vista Veterinary Clinic, where Peters brought her pets.Yutzy and Michael Bridge, the clinic’s veterinarian, brought Peters’ beloved Molly, a tiny terrier-mix to her bedside in hospice before the 65-year-old died May 31.”We wanted to ease her journey,” Bridge said.First it was stray cats that Peters adopted that Bridge cared for.”She had a a kind heart, she took in pets who had been abandoned,” said Bridge. “Whether a vaccination or sniffle she’d bring them in. When she got a pet she took better care of the pet than herself.”

Whisper, Sophie, and Morris were some of the cats who came to Peters as strays.

“They may have been a little scruffy, but she put food out for them and they instinctively took her as their pet,” Bridge said.

Then she became smitten with dogs. First there was Elsie, a big Bassett hound with a great personality. Elsie passed on last fall, said Bridge.

Peters was going to take a break from animal care. But her daughter, Phyllis Hoover, kept encouraging her to get another dog. They saw Molly at the animal shelter, and learned she was about to be put down. Peters had to rescue the little 12-pound terrier mix.

She is survived by three children, Hoover, Hutchinson, John Abildgaard, Chicago, and Shelly Bird, Colwich, three grandchildren and Molly.

“She was so giving,” Hoover said. “She was always thinking of other people and animals.”

Peters enjoyed her work at Walmart where she was a cashier for 22 years.

“She loved the customers and would get in trouble for talking and holding up the line,” Hoover said.

Peters was at Walmart when she had stroke. Taken to a hospital in Wichita, she was diagnosed with an inoperable aneurysm.

The animal world has lost a good friend, Yutzy said.

“Kathy bonded with animals and people and we all bonded together,” she said. “When you knew Kathy even for a little while it was like you knew her forever. She had a very big heart for the animals and they talked to her from their heart.”
