STERLING – Dale Shepherd, retired Reno County (Kansas) farmer/stockman, left his earthly home on May 30, 2016, in Grove, Oklahoma. He was 93 years old.

Mr. Shepherd was born on a farm west of Alden on Feb. 25, 1923, to Claud and Alta Bradley Shepherd. He attended Alden High School where he played basketball, baseball, and quarterbacked the football team, graduating in 1941. After working for a short time for Frank Stout of Raymond, he joined the U.S. Merchant Marine as a fireman/water tender. He crossed the Pacific Ocean four times during WWII, seeing such places as Shanghai China, and the Phillipines.

In 1947 he married Ila Mae Boldt of Bushton, Kansas. They lived briefly in Johnson, Kansas, where he worked for his uncle Jim Dimmitt. In 1949 the couple moved to a farm south of Sterling, Kansas, where he lived until July 2012. Mrs. Shepherd passed away in 1989. Following the death of his wife, his two grandsons were the lights of his life. He never missed a soccer game, cross-country meet, track meet or school program.

Through the years, Mr. Shepherd served multiple terms as the Medford Township treasurer, and ran the township road grader off and on for 60 years. He was a member of the Sterling chapter of the American Legion and a 70-year member of the First United Methodist Church of Sterling. Mr. Shepherd retired from farming/ranching in 2009. He spent the last 2½ years in Grove, Oklahoma, with his daughter, Nancy.

He is survived by: daughters Nancy Flowers (Ken) of Grove, Oklahoma, and Linda Corcoran (Kim) of Burrton, Kansas; grandsons Stephen Young (Holly) of Colorado Springs, CO, and Matthew Ediger (Sara) of St Peters, MO; granddaughter Windi Moody (Matthew) of Wylie, TX; great-grandchildren Audrey, Aaron, and Micheala; brother C.T. Shepherd (Pat) of Wichita.

A memorial service will be held Friday, June 10, at 1 p.m., at Birzer Funeral Home in Sterling, Kansas, followed by interment of ashes at the Sterling Cemetery. A reception will follow at the First United Methodist Church of Sterling. Officiating, Rev. Jeff Miller, Rev. Matthew Ediger

A scholarship has been established with Sterling High School (Kansas) for a young future farmer. Donations may be sent to Sterling High School c/o Birzer Funeral Home, Sterling.

She was a Kansas City resident for 25 years, formerly of Sterling. She was a Designer/Seamstress for the Missouri Repertory Theater at the University of Missouri at Kansas City. She graduated from Sterling High School in 1975, Sterling College in 1980 and the University of Missouri at Kansas City in 1990. She attended the United Methodist Church.
Survivors include: her mother, Dene Wagerle, Sterling; three brothers, Kerry Wagerle and wife Sharol, Sterling, Craig Wagerle and wife Sylvia, West Chester, Pa. and John Wagerle and wife Patty, Sterling; and seven nieces and nephews, Brian, Ty, Julie, Lisa, Toni, Ginny and Nick.
She was preceded in death by her father, Auverne.

Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday, July 16, 2010, at Birzer Funeral Home, Sterling, with Rev. Kendall Conner officiating. Visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m. Thursday, July 15, 2010, with the family present 5 to 7 p.m. at the Birzer Funeral Home. Burial will be in Sterling Community Cemetery. Veldene “Dene” Wagerle, 83, died Nov. 5, 2012 in Hutchinson. She was born May 18, 1929 in Sterling, daughter of Lorin and Hazel Marshall Ray. She was a lifetime resident of Sterling.
   She was a graduate of Sterling High School. She was an employee of Dillon Grocery Store in Sterling for 30 years in customer service. She was a member of Sterling United Methodist Church and Friday Bridge Club of Sterling.
   She married Auverne Lee Wagerle on July 20, 1947 in Sterling. He died July 14, 1992.
   She is survived by three sons, Kerry Wagerle (Sharol) of Sterling, Craig Wagerle (Sylvia) of West Chester, Pa., John Wagerle (Patty) of Sterling; brother Ronnie Ray of Arvada, Colo seven grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.
   She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Jana Wagerle; sisters, Thelma Hebard, Betty Hoffman, Maurie Colle, Dorthy Jo Barber, Lorene Hogan, Virginia Ray; one granddaughter, Virginia “Ginny” Larkin.
  Funeral service will be Friday, Nov. 9, 2012 at 2 p.m. at the Sterling United Methodist Church with Rev. Marvin Ewert and Rev. Kendall Conner officiating. Burial will be in Sterling Community Cemetery.

   Auverne Lee Wagerle died at his home in Sterling yesterday, July 14, 1992, at the age of 67.
   A lifetime Sterling resident, Mr. Wagerle was an officer with the Sterling Police Department and previously had been a tile setter for 22 years.
   Born May 8, 1925, in Nickerson to Frank E. and Ruth E. Meyer Wagerle, he married Dene Ray on July 20, 1947, in Sterling.
   He was a World War II veteran and a member of the United Methodist Church in Sterling.
   Survivors are his wife; three sons, Kerry and John of Sterling and Craig of Essington, Penn.; a daughter, Jana Sue Wagerle of Kansas City, Mo.; two brothers, Keith of Orange, Calif., and Charles of Wichita; two sisters, Frances Townsend of Riverside, Calif., and Kathryn Keil of Huffman, Tex.; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
   The Rev. James Graves will conduct a funeral at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the church. burial will be in the Sterling Community Cemetery.
   Friends may call from 3 until 8 p.m. Thursday at Porter and Sillin Funeral Home.

Former Sterling Man Died in Oklahoma City, Burial Here Today.

W. A. Taylor passed away at his home in Oklahoma City, Tuesday. The body will arrive in Sterling on No. 11 today, and funeral services will be held from the M.E. church at 1:30 this Thursday afternoon. Burial will be in the cemetery here, beside the wife who passed away several years ago.

The Taylors formerly lived on East Main street. Following the death of his wife, Mr. Taylor accompanied his daughter Myrtle, to Oklahoma City, where she is a teacher in the schools of that city, and where they made their home. Mr. Taylor was a Civil War veteran.

William A. Taylor was born in October 1844 in Hartsville, New York, his father, William, was 31 and his mother, Martha, was 24. He married Malintha Ellen (Minnie) Hinds and they had six children together. He also had one son and two daughters from another relationship. He died on December 26, 1936, at the age of 91.
