James Dean “Jim” Walden, 73, of Hutchinson, died Sunday, May 14, 2017. He was born March 28, 1944, in Springdale, Arkansas, the son of Donald David and Amy Marie (McQuiston) Walden.

Jim worked for Reno County Public Works with the road maintenance and bridge crew for over 28 years, retiring in 1993.

He was married to Karen Sue Booker. She died June 3, 1979. Surviving are: son, Eric and daughter-in-law Lanelle of Austin, TX; three granddaughters, Erica and husband Ben Waters, Whitney and husband Leon Everhart, all of Arlington, and Aubry and husband Jeff Weigel of Wichita; brothers, Eddie and Albert, both of Hutchinson; six great-grandchildren, Jacob, Ethan and Layla Waters, and Alayna, Leon IV and Alivia Everhart. James was preceded in death by his parents; son, Paul Aaron; brothers, Donald, Richard, Billy, Kenneth and Carl; and sisters, Barbara Stewart and Lela Marlow.

Memorial service will be 10 a.m. Monday, May 22, 2017, at Elliott Chapel, Hutchinson, with Pastor Steve Gill presiding. Inurnment will follow in Sterling Community Cemetery. Friends may sign his book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today through Sunday at Elliott Mortuary. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Elliott Mortuary and Crematory, Hutchinson.

STERLING – Donald L. Lawrence, 88, died Aug. 11, 2011, in Wichita. He was born March 9, 1923, in Olathe, the son of Roy and Estella Lunsford Lawrence. He graduated from Shawnee Mission North in 1942, and graduated from KSU in 1949, with a Bachelor’s Degree in Ag. Education. A resident of Sterling since 1958, he was a 4-H Extension Agent in Lyon County for seven years, before moving to Rice County, and retired from the Farmers Co-op at Sterling in January 1988.
He belonged to the United Methodist Church, American Legion, Sterling Country Club, was a past 4-H Club Leader, all at Sterling, and was the former chairman of the Rice County Arts Council. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in 1st Division 1st Army being wounded in France, and received the Purple Heart.

On June 5, 1949, he married Marilyn P. “Pat” Redmond, in Erie, Ks. She survives. Other survivors include: daughter, Melanie (Gary) Twineham, Hutchinson; a son, Brian (Joni), Lawrence; brother, Dean; sister, Jean Hopkins, five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Irene Amos, and a grandson, Jason Adams.

Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday Aug. 15, 2011, at the United Methodist Church, Sterling, with military honors by the Fort Riley Honor Guard, with the Rev. Marvin Ewertt presiding. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday Aug. 14, 2011, at Birzer Funeral Home, Sterling. Burial will be in Sterling Community Cemetery, at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the United Methodist Church, Sterling, or the donor’s choice, both in care of the funeral home.

Marilyn Patricia “Pat” Lawrence, 89, passed away April 22, 2017 at Sterling Presbyterian Manor. She was born December 14, 1927 in Benedict, KS., the daughter of Alva and Pearl Thiebaud Redmond. Pat graduated from Erie High School with the class of 1945, and in 1949 she received her bachelors of Liberal Arts from Kansas State University. Pat has resided in Sterling, KS. since 1958, formerly of Emporia, Ks. She was an office manager for Peoples Savings and Loan in Sterling for 25 years, retiring in 1987. Pat was a member of the United Methodist Church, Sterling; Rice County Arts Council; Creative Cooking; Kumjoynus Sunday School Class; and the American Association of University Women. Pat was united in marriage with Donald L. Lawrence on June 5, 1949 in Erie, KS. He preceded her in death on August 11, 2011. She is also preceded in death by her parents, and grandson, Jason Adams. Survivors include son, Brian and Jonie Lawrence, Lawrence, KS.; daughter, Melanie and Gary Twineham, Hutchinson, KS.; 5 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandchild. Graveside services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, April 26, 2017 at the Sterling Community Cemetery with Rev. Jeff Miller officiating. Visitation 2:00 to 7:00 P.M. Tuesday, April 25, 2017 at Birzer Funeral Home, Sterling with family present 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. Robert A. Johannsen, 91 died May 3, 2017, at Rice County District Hospital, Lyons. He was born to John Frederick and Lena Gossman Johannsen on September 27, 1925, rural Little River. He was a lifetime Rice County resident, a retired Farmer/Stockman and served in the United States Navy during World War II.  He married Ella Mae Showalter on August 14, 1949, at Saxman, she died on May 11, 1980; he married Betty Bindrum Herold April 4, 1982, at Las Vegas, she died on April 16, 2011. His memberships included the Midian Shrine, Salina; American Legion, Little River; VFW, former Saxman Grade School Board Member and USD 376 Sterling School Board Member; Wilson Township Board Member. Robert is survived by Sons, Mike & Brenda Johannsen, Tom & Linda Johannsen, Greg & Anita Johannsen all of Lyons, Step-Sons, J. L. Sterling:  Emery Dean Fountain (Deano) passed away peacefully on March 30, 2017, surrounded by family, at the age of 87. He was born Dec. 5, 1929, to Harold and Pearl Fountain in Lerado, Kan. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and love of his life for 64 years, Dorothea and brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Wanda Fountain. On June 7, 1950, he married Dorothea Mae Edgar in Sterling. He is survived by his children, Doug (Terry) Fountain, Castle Rock, Colo., Debby (Greg) Ek, Wichita, Deanne (Kevin) Nowlan, Sterling, and Dawn Fountain, Wichita. He is also survived by his brothers and sisters, Robb (Carolyn), Lubbock, Texas, Jack (Kay), Arlington, Budd (Glenda), Langdon, Cathie (Warren) Grant, Burke, Va., FloAnn (Rick) Brehm, Kansas City, Mo. He was the proud grandfather of eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, Kelly (Amanda) Fountain, Kaden, Kailey and Aidan, Hutchinson, Brook (Sam) Williams, Conan and Max, Littleton, Colo., Andrew (McKenzie) Ek, Greyson, Landen and Emery, Andover, Allison (Nick) Kerr, Madelyn and Brody, Wichita, Paige (Vance) Stegman and unborn child, Great Bend, Spencer Nowlan, Lawrence, Cole Slupski, Hutchinson, and Alexis Slupski, Wichita.

 Dean graduated from Langdon High School in 1947. After marriage, he worked as a farmer in Jewel County and later moved to Sterling where he continued to farm while also working for Arkla Gas Company, and then United/Contel Telephone Company, where he retired in 1997. Dean was a long time member of Lions Club and a devoted member of the Reformed Presbyterian Church, serving many years on the Deacon board.

Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 5, 2017, at the Reformed Presbyterian Church, Sterling. Visitation will be held at Birzer Funeral Home, Sterling, on Tuesday, April 4, 2017, from 2 to 7 p.m., with family present from 5 to 7 p.m. Memorials may be made to the Reformed Presbyterian Church in care of Birzer Funeral Home, Sterling.
