Jacquelyn “Jackie” P. Proffitt, 86, died Sept. 12, 2015, at her home. She was born June 10, 1929, in Omaha, Neb., the daughter of Amos and Ellen (Marker) Crockett.

Jackie graduated from Alden High School in 1946 and attended Kansas State University. She was a devoted farm wife and mother.

 She was a member of Countryside Baptist Church, where she belonged to the Friendship Sunday School class and volunteered countless hours at the church, serving on the membership committee and helping with Vacation Bible School. Jackie was also a member of the American Sewing Guild, the Christian Women’s Club, and had served on the Rice County Extension Board. Jackie was an amazing seamstress and enjoyed painting as a young adult.

On May 31, 1947, she married V. Gayle Proffitt in Pratt. He survives. Other survivors include: daughters, Teresa Harmon and husband Keith of Murfreesboro, Tenn., and Sherry Culpepper and husband Ryan of Warsaw, Mo.; son, Daniel Proffitt and wife Toni of Hutchinson; daughter-in-law, Robin Proffitt of Ellinwood; sister, Joyce Weiler-Forrester of Topeka; eight grandchildren, Jennifer Crawford, Spencer Proffitt, Ryan Harmon, Madison, Sebastian, and Malik Zahr, Jenna and Macie Proffitt; and three step-grandchildren, Casey Pohlman, Karle Jeppesen and Brandon Culpepper; and nine great-grandchildren.

 She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Crockett “Cap” Proffitt; and sister, Betty Frederick.

Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 17, 2015, at Countryside Baptist Church, 819 W. 30th, Hutchinson, with Pastor Ron Kyker officiating. Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson. Family visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Countryside Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Sterling Community Cemetery, Sterling. Memorials may be made to Countryside Baptist Church Cancer Ministry, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.

Joan Marie Hopping

Joan Marie Hopping died May 13, 2015, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. She was born July 17, 1940, in Winterset, Iowa, the daughter of John R. and Marian E. (Tigner) Ross.

 She graduated from Sterling High School in 1958, and received her Bachelor of Arts in elementary education from Wichita State University in 1969. Joan received her master’s degree in reading from Wichita State University in 1993. She began her teaching career at Fairmount Elementary in Wichita. Then for more than 20 years she taught and retired in 2006 from Graber Elementary in Hutchinson.
On Aug. 22, 1959, she married Jerold L. Hopping in Sterling. He preceded her in death on April 28, 1992. Joan was a lifelong member of KNEA, NEA, Hutchinson Area Retired School Personnel Association, and Kansas Association of Retired School Personnel. She was selected as Intermediate Teacher of the Year in Hutchinson in 2000-2001. Then she was nominated for the Disney Foundation Award in 2002-2003. Furthermore, she was a five time nominee and awarded entry into “Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers” in 1998, 2000, 2003, 2005, 2006 – an award she was very proud of because the selection was by former students. She is survived by: her son, John W. Hopping IV and wife Courtney of Carrollton, Texas; daughter, Lori Klaassen and husband DuWayne of Hutchinson; four grandchildren, Katelyn and Kendra Klaassen, Garrett and Quinn Hopping; sister, Janet Aves and husband Don of Garden Plain; aunt, Alice Sumner and husband Jim of Derby.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 16, 2015, at Countryside Baptist Church, Hutchinson, with Pastor Ron Kyker presiding. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Countryside Baptist Church or Sterling College, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.

STERLING — Quentin Dale Kilgore, 87, died July 28, 2015, at Sterling Presbyterian Manor. He was born July 31, 1927, in Mullinville, the son of John and Ruth Burnett Kilgore.

 A Sterling resident since 1955, moving from Mullinville, he was the principal of Midland and Union Two Schools and taught English for Sterling High School from 1966 to 1988. Quentin also did carpentry work around the Sterling area. Quentin graduated from Mullinville High School with the class of 1945 and later attended Sterling College, where he received his bachelor of education degree. He served in the U.S. Navy from May 4, 1945, to Dec. 20, 1946, attaining the rank of Fireman Second Class. He was a member and a deacon of Sterling Reformed Presbyterian Church, served two terms as mayor of Sterling, former member of the Sterling City Council and served on the Sterling Library board for many years.

On July 30, 1954, he married Irena McKissick in Glenwood, Iowa. Survivors include: wife, Irena of the home; son, Bill Kilgore and Andrea of Sterling; four daughters, Janet and Ken Fuller of Miltonvale, Kan., Barbara and Marty Viramontez of Wichita, Connie and Ken McWhirter of Moran, Kan., and Patricia and Mark Enoch of Topeka; brother, Robert and Nita Kilgore of Greensburg; two sisters, Shirley Brown of Fort Collins, Colo., and Sharon Rudd of Bucklin; 15 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Harold Kilgore; and sister, Velma Kilgore.

Funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 1, 2015, at Sterling Reformed Presbyterian Church, with Dr. Denny Prutow officiating. Burial will be held in Sterling Community Cemetery. Thomas M. Key, 84, died Feb. 1, 2016, at Wesley Towers, Hutchinson. He was born Oct. 16, 1931, in Sterling, the son of Norris and Helen Magers Key. He was a 1949 graduate of Sterling High School. A resident of Hutchinson for eight years, formerly a lifetime Sterling resident, he was a farmer.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, Sgt. E-5, where he served as a gunner on an A-26, flying 50 missions in Korea.

 He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Sterling Country Club and Sterling Farmers Co-op, all of Sterling.

On Nov. 10, 1956, he married Patricia Louise Belden in Sterling. She survives. Other survivors include: son, Randall S. Key and wife Tomi Sue, Hutchinson; two daughters, Karla R. Reiter and husband John, Tulsa, Okla., and Kristen R. Key, Denver, Colo.; three grandchildren, Sarah Key, Kansas City, Mo., Matthew and Kayla Key, Nickerson, and Paige Reiter, Boston, Mass.; two great-grandchildren, Jackson Scott Key and Ian Thomas Key.

 He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Robert Key.

STERLING – Maxine Marie Marlow Hayes “Mimi” passed away peacefully Nov. 15, 2015, at Hospice House, Hutchinson. She was born April 8, 1931, on an oil lease in Thrall, Kan., to Augustus and Erma Chew Marlow.

Maxine graduated from Sterling High School with the class of 1948. Following graduation, she attended Sterling College. Maxine married Charles Hayes on Oct. 12, 1952, in Newton. They celebrated 63 years of life together.

 She is survived by her husband, Charles, of the home; son, Tim and Cindy Hayes of Vancouver, Wash.; daughter Cynthia Morton of Sterling; grandchildren, Steven Hayes of Vancouver, Wash., Lauren Hayes of Honolulu, Hawaii, and Miles Morton of Sterling; many nieces and nephews; sister, Shirley and John Reese of Lawrence; brothers, Dr. Keith and Betty Marlow of Quemado, New Mexico, John and Sharon Hazard of Lyons; sisters-in-law, Peggy Marlow of Eskridge, and Betty Jayne Smoot of Sterling. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Darold Marlow; and sister-in-law, Virginia Rouse.

Maxine was a secretary at Sterling High School from 1965 to 1982, homemaker, avid golfer, artist, member of the Sterling United Methodist Church, where she was a former longtime choir member, past board member for the Rice Co. Arts Council, past Sterling Library board member, member of Sterling Country Club, Hutchinson Women’s Golf Association, Sorosis Club of Sterling, PEO, Mu Alpha Beta Sigma Phi Sponsor, member of many bridge clubs and “The May I Card Club.”

 Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 20, 2015, at the United Methodist Church, Sterling, with Rev. Jeff Miller and Rev. Rob Bolton officiating. Burial will be in Sterling Community Cemetery. STERLING – Virginia Haulman, 93, died Sept. 18, 2015, at Hospice House, Hutchinson. She was born March 18, 1922, in Peabody. She graduated from Nickerson High School, Nickerson. A longtime Colorado and Sterling resident, she was a homemaker and former Courthouse Clerk in Colorado.

On June 29, 1941, she married Royal T. Haulman in Nickerson. He died Nov. 5, 2009.
