Bulletin 01/21/1927      Grandma Wellman is at Rest:  Pioneer Settler of Rice County and Beloved Old Lady Has Gone to Her Reward

Mrs. Jane Ann Wellman, better known as “Grandma Wellman” died at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. E. C. Wellman, Tuesday, following a long illness. Mrs. Wellman was in her ninety-second year and until about a year age ago, was able to get much enjoyment out of life. On Christmas Eve a year ago, she fell and although she recovered from the injury she was never able to regain sufficient strength to be around again and during all this time had been confined to her bed.

Mrs. Wellman was one of the pioneer settlers of Rice County. In 1883, with her family, she located on a homestead in Valley township, Rice county, on what is known as the Wellman ranch, where they made their home until 1909 when they moved to Sterling. Her husband died in 1911, and since that time she has made her home with her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. E.C. Wellman, where she was most welcome.

Grandma Wellman was not of a complaining disposition. as a pioneer, she suffered many disappointments and went through many hardships, but she could always see the better side of things and never complained. Her life was spent in work and devotion to others. Her one admonition to her son in days of perplexity was, “use your own judgment even if it is poor” and that was largely the way she had gone through life herself- doing the best she could and asking and expecting no favors from anyone.  Out at the ranch where she spent many pleasant days in the years gone by, she helped to plant the trees that now resemble a forest and which stand as a living monument to her memory.

When the Wellman family located in the county, there were very few trees any place and during these past years, she took an increasing pride in the growth of the trees.

Her life having been spent in service for others and in devotion to those who loved her, her family accept her passing without a regret and are thankful that her sickness and death were apparently without pain.

Jane Ann McMillan was born at Pavilion, N.Y., November 8, 1834. There she was married to James M. Wellman, on April 9, 1856. Four children were born to them; I. Wellman, who now lives in Beverly Hills, Cal.; Eva Jane, who preceded her in death in 1912; Elton E. Wellman, of Circle, Mont.; and Edward C. Wellman, of this city. There are also nine grandchildren, all living, one of whom Miss Ruth Given has been with her and cared for her in her last illness. There is also one great-granddaughter. Mrs. Wellman was next to the oldest of a family of seven children, only one of whom survives her.

The deceased was a member of the United Presbyterian church until her marriage when she united with the Baptist church of LaGrange, N.Y. On coming to Kansas in 1879, she became a member of the Alden and Sterling congregations of the same denomination and remained a faithful member until her death.

Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon, at 2:30, at the Baptist church, conducted by Rev. Taylor. Quietly she lived, quietly she passed away, but the memory of a good mother and of a truly noble and self-sacrificing woman will live long in the hearts of her family and her friends.
