MILLER, Lela V. Age 82 of Wichita, Kansas, passed away in Birchwood Care Center, on Sunday, December 30, 2007 at  1:15 A.M. , Hamilton, Butler County, Ohio.

She was born in Ness County, Kansas on July 15 1925, the daughter of Perl and Emma (Koester) Pember.  Lela was employed in sales for Stanley Home Products for 40 years retiring in 1998. On June 15, 1945, in Pasadena, California, she was married to James “Vic” Miller and he preceded her in death in 1983. She is survived by two sons; Van (Patricia) Miller of Hamilton, Ohio and Gary (Debbie) Miller of Baldwin, Kansas. She was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Sheryl Miller in 1994; one brother, Lavern Pember and three sisters; Geneva Stamp, Verda McCoy and Gertrude Elliott. A graveside service will be held in the Sterling Community Cemetery, Sterling, Kansas on Thursday, January 3, 2008 at 2P.M. There will be no visitation. Harold H. Proffitt, 92, former Alden resident, died Sunday, Nov. 18, 2007, at Hospice House Hutchinson. He was born Nov. 20, 1914, in rural Reno County, the son of Arthur and Lydia Elliott Proffitt. He graduated from Alden High School in 1932. A lifetime resident of Alden, moving to Hutchinson, he was a retired farmer and cattleman. He was a member of the Alden United Methodist Church, was the former Sunday school superintendent, former 4-H Leader, member of the Alden Pride Committee and former Alden Valley Cemetery Board member. On Feb. 18, 1940, he married Helen Thornbury at Sterling.Survivors include his wife, Helen; a son Arlen “Butch,” Hutchinson; a daughter Diana C. Graf, Onaga; a brother, Gerald, Alden; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Clinton, Dale, and Arlos Proffitt, a sister, Betty Duft, and a great-granddaughter.Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Alden United Methodist Church with the Revs. Juanita Catlin and Bill Stapleton officiating. Burial will be in Sterling Community Cemetery.

Howard W. McCrum

STERLING – Howard Wiley McCrum, 98, died July 26, 2007, at Sandstone Heights Nursing Home, Little River. He was born March 21, 1909, in Saxman, the son of Alexander M. and Luella F. Cole McCrum. He graduated from Sterling High School and Pittsburg State Trade School for printers. A longtime resident of Sterling, he was a retired linotype operator for the Sterling Bulletin. He belonged to United Methodist Church, was a former secretary and member of the Masonic Lodge, former president and board member of USD No. 376, former president and member of the Sterling Country Club, former chief and volunteer fireman for the Sterling Fire Department, all in Sterling, past worthy patron and member of the Eastern Star, Lyons and Sterling, and received his 60-year pin for the Eastern Star and Masonic Lodge. On Oct. 12, 1933, he married Charlotte M. Vogel in Sterling. She died Jan. 8, 2004. Survivors include: two daughters, Johannah Knoll, Chandler, Ariz., and Priscilla Carder, Sterling; a son-in-law, Leonard Doughty, Wichita; eight grandchildren, Marty Doughty, Mike Knoll, Jo Beth Mills, Jenny Knoll, Jeff Knoll, Doug Carder, Rob Carder and Ted Carder; 18 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Jane Ann Doughty; and two brothers, Verner McCrum and Kenneth McCrum. Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, at United Methodist Church, Sterling, with the Rev. Nancy Goddard presiding. Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Monday at Birzer-Sillin Funeral Home, Sterling, with the family present. Burial will be in Sterling Community Cemetery. Memorials may be sent to the Sterling Country Club, or Sandstone Heights Nursing Home, both in care of the funeral home.

PEORIA – Ronald Dean Stout, 67, of Sterling, Kan., formerly of Peoria, died June 30, 2007, at his residence.

He was born Feb. 27, 1940, in Sterling, Kan., to Clifford and Eithel (Thode) Stout. He married Fira Sue Oden on Aug. 12, 1960, in Manhattan, Kan.

She survives, along with daughter, Kimberly (Kyle) Thoren of Bloomfield Hills, Mich.; daughter-in-law, Cay Stout of Toledo, Ohio; three brothers, Marion (Sam) Stout of El Dorado Springs, Mo., Leonard Stout of Orinda, Calif., and James Gibson of Sterling, Kan.; mother-in-law, Anita Oden of Sterling, Kan.; and four grandchildren, Jackson and Jami Stout of Toledo, Ohio, and Logan and Nicklas Thoren of Bloomfield Hills, Mich.

He was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents; son, Douglas Stout; stepfather, Galen Gibson; and brother, Robert Gibson.

He graduated from Sterling High School in 1958 and from Kansas State University in 1963 with a Bachelor of Science in agricultural engineering.

He worked for Caterpillar for 36.5 years, traveling worldwide and retiring as product support manager of the Worldwide Mining Group.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Sterling, Kan.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 5 at First United Methodist Church in Sterling, Kan., with the Rev. Nancy Goddard officiating. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the church. Burial will be in Sterling Community Cemetery.

Wedding of Miss Scoresby and Gleeman Long

Miss Jean Margaret Scoresby and Gleeman Long of Sterling, were married Tuesday afternoon at 4:30, in the home of the bride’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. F. S. Scoresby on East Main Street. Rev. C.T. Carson was the officiating minister. The couple was unattended.

The bride wore a street-length dress of rose velvet, with accessories of black. Her corsage was of white chrysanthemums.

Following the ceremony, a wedding supper was served to members of the immediate family, after which Mr. and Mrs. Long left, on the Santa Fe for a honeymoon in Colorado. For traveling, the bride wore a sports dress of dark green corduroy, with a beige coat.

Mr. and Mrs. Long will be at home in Lakin, where the former will be associated with his brother-in-law Kendall Piper, in working for the White Eagle Oil Company.

Mrs. Long is a graduate of Sterling High School and Christian College at Columbia, Mo. Mr. Long received his degree from Sterling College, last spring, and this summer has been the manager at Sterling Lake.
