STERLING – Glenn W. McMurphy, 85, died March 3, 2010, at Rice County District Hospital in Lyons. He was born March 19, 1924, in Sterling to Luther and Rozetta Denbo McMurphy, and a lifelong Sterling resident. He was a retired farmer and stockman, worked at Pratt Sale Barn for 32 years, and meter reader for Ark Valley. He graduated from Sterling High School in 1942. He attended United Methodist Church in Alden and was a member of: Masonic Lodge; Odd Fellows, both of Sterling; and Kansas Livestock Association. On March 19, 1983, he married Darlene Price at Alden.

Survivors: wife of the home; four daughters, Marlene and husband Jerry Legleiter of Sterling, Sondra and husband Ted Mueller of Wichita, Pat and husband Scott Bruning of Panama City Beach, Fla., Cindy and husband Curt Darling of Alden; 23 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by: grandson Michael Darling; granddaughter Amy Bolton; brothers Dewey, Roy, Harlen, Nevin and Marvin; sisters Mabel Humphreys, Myrle Heckle and Hazel Tyler.

Funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Birzer Funeral Home, Sterling, with Pastor Chuck Taylor officiating. Burial in Sterling Community Cemetery. Everett L. Warn, 86, died Jan. 25, 2010, at Promise Regional Medical Center, Hutchinson. He was born Oct.19, 1923 in Hemingford, Neb. to Lewis O. and Grace Slaymaker Warn.
He was a Hutchinson resident for six and a half years, former longtime Sterling resident and Nickerson resident. He was an Electrician for Sterling College; owner of Warn Electric, where he helped build gas stations all across Kansas.
He was a member of Silver Threads, Sterling, AARP and American Legion Post #68, Hutchinson. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during World War II.
On Jan. 20, 1963, he married Hazel A. Miller in Sterling. She survives. Other survivors include: two grand children and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two daughters,Sharon Osler and Carolyn DiPio; a sister Margaret E. Horton.
Funeral will be a 2 p.m. Friday at Birzer Funeral Home, Sterling, with Rev. Marvin Ewertt officiating. Burial will be in Sterling Community Cemetery, Sterling with Military Honors by Ft. Riley Honor Guard. Memorials may be made to Sterling College in care of the funeral home.

STERLING – Blanche Crawford Ball, 80, passed away Nov. 24, 2009, at Sterling. She was born Feb. 24, 1929, at Syracuse, N.Y., to Frank Nickell and Kathryn Elizabeth Wilson Crawford. She was a Middleton, Ohio high school graduate and attended Sterling College, Fort Hays State, and Antelope Valley College, Lancaster, Calif. She had lived in Lancaster for 33 years before returning to Kansas to be closer to their children. Her love of music began at the age of five when her parents let her start lessons. She played both piano and organ. At age nine she played for her first Sunday service when the regular pianist could not get to the church due to a snowstorm. She continued playing for various churches throughout the rest of her life. She gave private lessons at age 14 for 50 cents in College Corner, Ohio, where her father was pastor of U.P. Church. She was one of the organists at Park Place Christian Church. On Nov. 6, 1947, she married Earl Ross Ball at Sterling. She married Calvin Earl Rakestraw on May 9, 1936 in Great Bend. He preceded her in death on April 1, 1988. She is also preceded in death by a brother, 3 sisters, and a grandson. She is survived by sons, E.W. “Dub” (Anita) Rakestraw of El Dorado and Curtis D. (Diana) Rakestraw of Wichita; daughters, Verlee Adam of El Dorado, Linda R.
