Lucile Gordon Hamm, 87, entered Heaven on Friday (Oct. 1, 2010).She was born on April 18, 1923, to Howard W. and Nelida Vessot Gordon in Monmouth, Ill. As the daughter of a United Presbyterian minister, she grew up in Illinois, Missouri, Iowa, Kansas and Washington. She attended Sterling College from 1940 to 1942, and nursing school in Boise, Idaho, from 1942 to 1945.While at Sterling College, she met Orval L. Hamm, who graduated from Sterling College in 1943.He attended The University of Kansas Medical School and served as a medic in World War II. They were married on June 7, 1946, in Canon City, Colo. They served as medical missionaries under the Presbyterian Church for three years in Assuit, Egypt, and for 33 years in Sialkot, Pakistan. They retired to Newton in 1988, where they were active in Health Ministries and in First Presbyterian Church. Lucile was preceded in death by her husband, Orval L. Hamm; son-in-law, Terry Cook; granddaughter, Janessa Smith; and sister-in-law, Margaret Gordon. Robert G. Cundith, 68, died Aug. 31, 2010, at his home in Sterling. He was born July 23, 1942, in Sterling to John and Eula Edwards Cundith. A lifetime resident of Sterling, he graduated from Sterling High School and from Emporia State University. He was a self-employed accountant and former partner of Pratt Livestock, Inc.

He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church, Sterling, treasurer and board member of Sterling Country Club and Lyons Town and Country club, member of Prairie Dunes Country Club, Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity, a U.S. Olympics supporter, past president of Sterling Chamber, charter member of the Sterling Preservation Association, and a longtime benefactor of the Prairie Art Show and Sterling College.

On May 8, 1964, he married Karen Ann Wilkey at Emporia. She died July 23, 2008.

Survivors include: a son, Tyler and wife Annette, Overland Park; a daughter, Sara Nafus and husband Chris, Lenexa; a brother, John, Broken Arrow, Okla.; six sisters, Joyce Deegan, Tehachapi, Calif., Anna Mae Alexander, Altus, Okla., Flora Pearson, Moss Point, Miss., Betty Willson, Carpinteria, Calif., Judy Fulton, Sterling, and Barbara Engelland, Shawnee; and four grandchildren, Brandon and Kelsey Cundith and Lauren and Robbie Nafus.

He was preceded in death by an infant son David, and four brothers, Tom, Harry, Horace and Richard.

Funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at United Presbyterian Church, Sterling, with the Rev. Seth Svaty officiating. Visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m. Friday, with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. at Birzer Funeral Home, Sterling. Burial will be in Sterling Community Cemetery.

Alvin Lee Schneider, 88, died Aug. 14, 2010, at Hospice House, Hutchinson. He was born June 19, 1922, at the family farm in rural Rice County, the son of George H. and Bertha Schneider. He attended schools in Nickerson, graduating from high school in 1940. In Nov. of 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy receiving basic training, followed by electrician training at Coyne Electrical School in Chicago. He was stationed at several locations in the Pacific Theater during World War II and was discharged in Jan. of 1946, at Great Lakes Station in Chicago. He returned to work in Sterling for Walton Electric, then the City of Sterling working as a lineman then in the Power Plant eventually becoming Superintendent. In 1966, he became the Superintendent of the Power Plant in Neodesha until he retired. He worked at IMCO in Neodesha until they moved to Hutchinson in 1991.On Jan. 2, 1949, he married Glenys Irene McDill at the Midland Community Church in rural Rice County. They had three sons, Terry (Lisa) of Wichita and Roger (Debbie) of Wellington. Tom of Wichita preceded him in death in December 1997, at the age of 44. He is survived by sister, Laberta Hopping of McPherson; brother, Don Schneider of Duncan, Neb.; three grandchildren, Travis, Jared, Eric; three step-grandchildren, Stacy (Ryan), Stephanie (Rich) and Trey (Shanyn); several nieces and nephews; eight step great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Helen Schneider of Fairview, Okla. He was preceded in death by twin brothers and a brother Cloyd.Alvin enjoyed sports, playing men’s softball in Sterling until the age of 45, and watching his son’s school sports. He and his wife continued watching sports on TV, Hutch JUCO basketball and tournaments. He also enjoyed bowling, participating in leagues at Sterling, Neodesha and the Senior leagues in Hutchinson through the spring of 2010. Alvin was a member of the Lion’s Clubs of Sterling and the First United Methodist Church of Hutchinson.Graveside service will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in Sterling Community Cemetery, Sterling. STERLING — Evelyn Virginia Engelland, 94, died on Wednesday (May 26, 2010) at Presbyterian Manor in Sterling. She was born on July 20, 1915, to John Orion and Mary Eva Stout Stubbs in Sterling, and was a lifetime Sterling resident. She graduated from Sterling High School in 1931. On April 22, 1934, she married Alvin Jurgen Engelland in Sterling. He preceded her in death on June 10, 2004. Evelyn was a homemaker and farm wife. She was a member of Midland Community United Church of Christ; a 60-year member of Queen Esther Chapter 32 Order of the Eastern Star; past matron of Keystone Chapter 47; and many other community organizations. She is survived by her sons, John and wife Judy of Sterling, James and wife Sue of Ft. Worth, Texas, Richard and wife Noreen of Chipley, Fla., and Rodney and wife Barbara of Shawnee; daughter Betty L. Seely and husband Marlin of Newton; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; son Robert; infant daughter Janeth; granddaughter Loreen; brothers Percy Stubbs and Lurton Stubbs; and sisters Bernadine Steierl, Esther Horton and Phyllis Ward. Ms. Harris was a member of the San Diego Friends of the Zoo.

STERLING – Hazel A. Warn, 86, died March 4, 2010, at her home, Hutchinson. She was born Sept. 7, 1923, in Sterling, to Melvin and Isabella McDill Miller. She graduated from Sterling High School. A resident of Hutchinson for six and a half years, formerly a life-long resident of Sterling, she was a housewife and Sterling College employee. She belonged to the United Methodist Church, Order of the Eastern Star, Silver Threads, Sterling, and AARP. On Jan. 20, 1963, she married Everett L. Warn in Sterling. He died Jan. 25, 2010. Survivors include: grandchildren, Anthony DiPio Jr., Savannah, Ga., and Laura Clark, Deltona, Fla.; five great-grandchildren and close friends, Mark Buckley and Geneva Nisly. She was preceded in death by daughters, Sharon Osler and Carolyn DiPio, brothers, William Miller and Robert Miller, and sister, Helen Sterner. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church, Sterling, with Pastor Marvin Ewertt presiding. Burial for both Hazel and Everett will be in Sterling Community Cemetery, with military graveside rites conducted by the Fort Riley Honor Guard. Memorials may be sent to Sterling College or Rice/Reno County Hospice, in care of Birzer Funeral Home, Sterling. (From Hutchnews)
