STERLING – Gerald L. Cullop, 78, died March 3, 2012, at his residence in Sterling. He was born April 11, 1933, in Manchester, Okla., the son of Bert McKinley and Josephine Rachel Young Cullop. He married Carolyn Grace Fulton May 28, 1956, in Twenty-Nine Palms, Calif. Survivors include: his wife, Carolyn of the home; son, Jerry and Kelly Cullop of Sterling; daughter, Sally Peterson of Manhattan; three sisters, Maxine Robertson of Oxford, Kan., Florence McKee of Talala, Okla., Virginia Bradley of Anthony, Kan.; five grandchildren, Kelsey Peterson, Maret (Clayton) Schrader, Janna (Matt) Splitter, Jacey Cullop, Jared Cullop; and his first great-grandchild due in June. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Ernest Cullop. STERLING – LaVerne H. Barnes, 75, died Feb. 13, 2012, North of Sterling as a result of an auto accident. He was born Jan. 9, 1937, in Hutchinson, the son of Robert R. and Audrey Kelley Barnes. He was a Sterling resident since 1978. He was a retired Postal Clerk in Hutchinson. He graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1955 and attended Ottawa University. He was a U.S. Army veteran. He was a member of United Methodist Church, American Legion, both of Sterling, Retired Postal Workers, Hutchinson.
On Feb. 9, 1978, he married Kay LeMay Wiebe in Sterling. Survivors include: his wife, Kay of the home; a daughter, Kimberly Barnes, Hutchinson; a stepdaughter, Kim Williams, Lyons; two stepsons, Kevin and Deb Wiebe, Omaha, Arkansas, and Curt and Deb Wiebe, Sterling; a brother, Robert K. and Donna Barnes, Salina; a sister, Elaine Ward, Topeka; nine grandchildren, Kylee (Miller) DePina, Derek Wiebe, Brenna (Brandon) Winn, Samantha (Erik) Finster, Jessica (Jason) Sullins, Zachary Manns, Jeff (Jessie) Wiebe, Krystall Barnes-Terry, Darrien Ellsworth and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Albert E. Barnes and Lester E. Barnes.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 17, 2012, at United Methodist Church, Sterling, with Rev. Marvin Ewertt officiating. Visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, 2012, at Birzer Funeral Home, Sterling, with family present from 5 to 7 p.m. Private burial in Sterling Community Cemetery. Memorials may be sent to Sterling United Methodist Church in care of the funeral home.

Martha Jean Creswell Spotts was born on Jan. 8, 1919, in Coulterville, Ill., to the Rev. Andrew and Eleanor (Wilson) Creswell and passed away at Vista Grande Inn in Cortez, on Feb. 11, 2012, at age 93. Jean grew up in Pontiac, Mich., and attended Muskingum College, New Concord, Ohio, and Eastern Michigan University, Ypsilanti, Mich. On April 5, 1941, she married Alfred Spotts in Pontiac. Al and Jean spent the first part of their marriage in Pittsburgh, Pa. area where twins, Al and Ann, were born, then Andy, Jim, and Joe. They moved to Sterling, Kan. in 1951, and John was born soon after. In 1955, she graduated from Sterling College, in Sterling. On graduation day, five of their six children had chicken pox. Later, Jan and Tim were born. She was a dedicated mother of eight children and was also able to extend her nurturing skills and caring concern to many besides family. No one was a stranger in their home. Jean taught school on the elementary level and high school home economics, was active in Mutual Improvement Club and PEO, enjoyed ceramics, knitting, crocheting, and reading. She loved traveling to visit their children, being with people, and touring with various groups. On their 25th wedding anniversary, they went to the Holy Land, and they also took trips to Ethiopia and Scotland. Al and Jean lived in Kansas City, Oswego, and Columbus, Kan. in the 70’s and 80’s until retirement, then returned to Lyons and Sterling in central Kansas. They lived briefly in Cortez from 1988-89, and in Rico, Colo. in 1994, where Al filled in as pastor in Presbyterian churches. In 2006, they moved to Vista Mesa Assisted Living in Cortez, and moved to Vista Grande Inn in 2010. Sons Joe and John died in June 2008. Jean is survived by her husband, Al, of Cortez; her sister Eleanor van Lierop of Chicago, Ill.; and brother Andrew Creswell of Albuquerque, N.M. Surviving sons include Al and wife Maggie Steptoe of Louisville, Ky.; Andy of Chicago; Jim of Mariposa, Calif.; and Tim of Concord, Calif. Surviving daughters are Ann and husband Chuck Haspels of Cortez; and Jan and husband Jim McHenry of Houston, Texas. Grandchildren are Tamara Haspels of Portland, Ore.; Molly Haspels Wickstrom and husband Scott Wickstrom of Arvada, Colo.; Chad Haspels and wife Jennifer of Pagosa Springs, Colo.; Sarah Spotts and husband Kevin Covey of Flagstaff, Ariz.; Kathryn Spotts and husband Nick Lienesch of Minneapolis, Minn.; Libby Spotts of Minneapolis; Celeste Spotts of Glenwood, Iowa; James McHenry of Houston; Joel McHenry of Houston; and Josh McHenry of Houston. Great-grandchildren are Ryley and Calvan Wickstrom of Arvada. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Feb. 18, at 11 a.m. at Montezuma Valley Presbyterian Church, 350 S. Washington St., Cortez. STERLING – Rolan Lee Cobb, 74, died Sunday, Jan. 15, 2012. He was born in Oklahoma City, Jan. 18, 1937, the son of D. Monroe and Zona Susan Hufford Cobb. He was a graduate of Partridge High School, he had been attending Partridge Community Church, was a communications engineer and previous owner of KLOQ radio station.
On Dec. 31, 1977, he married Helen M. Geist in Sterling. She survives. Other survivors include: a daughter, Linda Cobb, Grants Pass, Oregon; a son-in-law, Arlen Nuest, Sterling; four stepsons, Kenneth (Mary) Geist, McPherson, Larry (Barbara) Geist, St. Cloud, Florida, Keith (Lorna) Geist, Bel Aire, and William Ray (Donna) Geist, Sterling; a brother, William (Sally), Wichita; three grandchildren, Brent (Tenille) Nuest, Dustin (Jennifer) Nuest, and Renee (Cale) Nelson; three great-grandchildren, Treten, Bristol and Cate; a nephew, Mike Cobb, and a niece, Rachel Cobb.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Cathy Nuest; his parents; his birth mother, Wanda McBride, and his first wife, Donna Ruth Battin.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 19, 2012, at Partridge Community Church, with Pastor R. Samuel Askew officiating. Burial will be in Sterling Community Cemetery. Friends may call 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday, with family present 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. Daryl was born in Sterling, Kansas on November 14, 1935 to Clyde E. and Alice M. Burke Murphy and was the grandson of early homesteaders, Ralph I. Murphy and Julia Elinor Burns Murphy. He graduated from Sterling High School in 1953 and attended Kansas State University, Emporia State University and Sterling College. He married Kathleen Minter in 1964 and had one daughter, Kelley Maureen Murphy who was born in 1966. Daryl was with Cessna Aircraft in Wichita, Kansas as Merchandising Manager before becoming the editor of General Aviation News, Southwest Correspondent for Aviation International News and was a contributor to Cessna Flyer, Piper Flyer, Airport Journal, Business Jet Flyer as well as being the author of seven auto and aviation books. Memorial service will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 14, 2012 at St. Marks Episcopal Church, 6th and O’Connor, Irving, Texas. Interment will be at the Sterling, Kansas cemetery at a later date.
