STERLING – Bill Ball, 67, died Feb. 13, 2013, East of Sterling, Kan. He was born May 21, 1945, in Sterling, the son of Ralph and Charlotte Tippin Ball.

A lifetime Sterling resident, he graduated from Sterling High School in 1963, and Sterling College in 1967, where he received his teaching degree. He was a farmer/rancher and former Alden High School Teacher and Coach. His memberships included: United Presbyterian Church, Past President of the Farmers Coop Union Board, former First National Bank Board member, Sterling Literary Club, and received the Kansas Master Farmer Award in 2009.

On Oct. 17, 1964, he married Mona Fisher in Sterling. Survivors include: his wife, Mona of the home; two sons, Monte Ball and fiancé Carrie, Brian and Becky Ball and daughter, Tami and Steve Hosman, all of Sterling; sister, Charlene and Willis Wilson of Kansas City, Mo.; grandchildren, Andy and Jestina Ball, Brayden Hosman, Conan and Courtney Ball, Brandon and Lauren Frederick. His parents preceded him in death.

Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 18, 2013, at the United Presbyterian Church, Sterling, with Reverend Seth Svaty officiating. Burial will be in the Sterling Community Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. with family present Sunday, Feb. 17, 2013, at Birzer Funeral Home, Sterling. Memorials may be made to United Presbyterian Church, Rice County 4-H or Sterling College Football, all in care of Birzer Funeral Home, Sterling.

Ralph Ball, a 1933 graduate of Sterling High School, was a leader in agriculture and community activities throughout his life.  He and his son, Bill, operated a farming and livestock partnership, handling corn, milo, wheat and alfalfa, plus a cattle-feeding operation in the Sterling area.
In 1981, Ball was nominated by President Reagan and confirmed by the US Senate to serve a six-year term on the 13-member Federal Farm Credit Board which is the policy-making body of the borrower-owned Farm Credit System.
Ball served as a vice chairman on the board of Farmland Industries, as a member of the Board of FAR-MAR-CO, Inc. and Farmland Insurance.  He was on the Executive Board of Sterling College and served as an elder of the United Presbyterian Church.
Ball was a director of the Kansas Association of Wheat Growers and a past board president of Great Plains Wheat.  He was board chairman of the Kansas Wheat Commission, the USD 376 School Board and the Farmers Cooperative of Sterling.  He served as an observer at the Kennedy Round GATT Negotiations at Geneva and served as a member of the White House Conference on Food, Health and Nutrition.  Ball also was a recipient of the Kansas Master Farmer Award. He received the Sterling High School National Honor Society Black Bear Award for honorable character and his distinguished promotion of scholarship, leadership and service in his career.

Charles R. Atwater, 85 of Hutchinson, KS, passed into eternity on July 3, 2009. He was born in Boston, MA.His siblings were Joe, Helen and Robert. Charles spent his early years in Boston, and in January 1943, he served his country in the US Signal Corps where he was stationed in India. On July 4, 1949, he married Betty E. Jackson. They had four children, Ruth Peterson (Hastings, Neb.); James Atwater (Hutchinson); Carol Beal (Colorado Springs, Colo.); and Steve Atwater (traveling with Covenant Players in South America). Charles earned an Ed.M. and an Ed.D. from Boston University.He served as Dean of Students at Sterling College and became head of the Psychology Department. He then went on to work at the Horizons Mental Health Center, Hutchinson, until his retirement in 1993. Surviving family members include his wife, four children, seven grandchildren and a sister.Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 6, 2009 at Forest Park Presbyterian Church, Hutchinson with Rev. Ernest Williams presiding. Burial will be at 2:00 p.m. in Sterling City Cemetery, Sterling. Friends may sign the register book 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. with family to receive friends 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. all Sunday, July 5, 2009 at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson.In care of the mortuary, memorial donations may be made to the Sterling College, Horizons Mental Health Center or Covenant Players.

Funeral Services were held for Thomas Atkinson at the Dawson funeral home Monday afternoon, who died at the home of his son, Charles Atkinson, August 8. Services were conducted by Rev. Charles R. Shatto, of the First Congregational Church of which Mr. Atkinson was a member. Cremation followed the services at Greenwood Memorial Park.

Mr. Atkinson was a native of Illinois and was aged eighty years and nine months. He was a veteran of the Civil War and a member of G.A.R.

Forty-five years ago Mr. Atkinson entered the banking business, in which he was engaged up to a few years ago when he retired from active life, coming to Long Beach, where he lost his wife three years ago. since then much of his time was spent at the home of his son, in National City. He had a remarkable experience a few months ago when he fell to the bottom of a well and was imprisoned for nineteen hours, while relatives searched for him. He was finally discovered by his son’s wife. He suffered no ill effects from the experience other than a sprained ankle. He died from the effects of heart disease, being ill but a few days before his passing away.
