Obituary

1/20/1947
Funeral services for Harold Arthur “Pat” Kannard, 7 years old, who was drowned Saturday in the Sterling lake, will be held at 3 o’clock Tuesday afternoon at the Sterling Methodist church. Burial will be in the Sterling cemetery.
He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold R. Kannard of Sterling. Mr. Kannard is a painter.
The accident occurred Saturday afternoon after Pat and his 9-year-old brother, Jack, had gone to the lake, in the south part of Sterling, to have a look around. The boys saw ducks swimming just beyond the icy rim of the lake. Pat ventured onto the ice to scare them.
Jack, who is heavier, held back and saw his brother wander ten or twelve feet from shore before the thin ice suddenly gave way beneath him. The boy was plunged suddenly into 18 feet of chilling water.
Jack watched his brother struggle a moment and then ran for help. He thought of his scoutmaster, Harold Johnson, who supervises the Cub pack to which Jack belongs; Johnson lives a short distance from the west side of the lake.
He wasn’t at home, but Mrs. Johnson heard Jack’s tale and went into action. She called first the Sterling fire department and then some other men.
A crowd soon gathered at the lake. Various persons tried to recover the drowning Pat. A couple of volunteers, Dennis Savage and Billy Peck, stripped to the shorts and, secured by ropes, dived into the icy water, but were unable to find the body.
Earl Higley, veteran fisherman, went into action with his rod and reel. His fish hook finally found Pat’s body and it was pulled to shore. More than an hour elapsed since the boy went into the water. Artificial respiration and a mechanical inhalator rushed to Sterling by the Hutchinson fire department were used for more than an hour, but failed to revive the boy.
Besides his parents and brother, Harold Arthur is survived by a sister, Marsha Darlene; his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Dora Kannard of Caney and his maternal grandfather, E. V. Olson of Duluth, Minn.
He was a second-grader in the Sterling schools.
Until recently Mr. Kannard was employed by a Salina Milling company as an elevator maintenance man. He has since been operating a spray paint outfit. He was redecorating the family’s home when the accident occurred.

Jones, Dr. Cheryl Ann ‘Cheri ‘ (O’Brien)               wife of Scott Robert

Burial Date: 2013,  07/03        Age: 50             Lot: 1219 F

Died in Kansas City, MO  6/28/2013        DVM

This site is dedicated to the late Dr. Cheryl (Cheri) Ann Jones whose passion and dedication for all animals will always be remembered. Cheri’s life was full of love for her husband, Scott; children, Jack and Julia; and all her clients at State Line Animal Hospital. Beloved veterinarian, avid researcher and animal lover, Cheri dedicated much of her time to animal research which eventually led her to Likarda.

Diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 9, Cheri had a special love and compassion for animals living with diabetes. In 1993, Cheri experienced kidney failure due to complications from diabetes. That same year, she became the 56th person at San Francisco Hospital to receive a successful kidney and pancreas transplant, which cured her diabetes.

Cheris Family

Likarda and its research to treat diabetes in dogs and cats, as well as its Pet Organ Donation Network, attracted Cheri’s attention. After meeting with Likarda founders Lisa Stehno-Bittel and Karthik Ramachandran in-person, she quickly felt a connection to Likarda and its mission. Likarda relies on donated pancreata for its research and established the Pet Organ Donation Network so that upon death, pet owners have an opportunity to donate their beloved pet’s organs to contribute to the future health of other animals.

Even though Cheri Cheri Jonespassed away on June 28, 2013 from duodenal cancer complications, her legacy lives through Cheri’s Hope, Likarda’s Pet Organ Donor Network. Cheri was passionate about finding a way to help animals with diabetes and hopefully the research performed through pet organ donation will someday also lead to a cure for humans.

http://www.signaturefunerals.comCheryl Ann (O’Brien) Jones started her journey to Heaven on June 28, 2013. Cheri passed away due to complications from duodenal cancer initially diagnosed in late 2011. She lived her last 18 months on this earth the same way she did the first 50 years . . . with her heart full of love for her family, especially her husband Scott and children Jack and Julia, as well as family throughout Kansas and California. Cheri was equally devoted to her clients at State Line Animal Hospital. She admired her partner Dr. Vern Otte like a father, and she adored and was grateful for the love and support of her work colleagues to the end.Cheri was born in Alameda, California, and valedictorian at Alameda High School. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of California at Davis and proceeded directly to U.C. Davis School of Veterinarian Medicine (the first ever to be chosen to proceed directly from U.C. Davis undergrad to U.C. Davis’ vet school). Cheri was working at an externship in Santa Cruz, CA when she met her future husband Scott. They married in 1992 and started their first home together in Kansas. Cheri received her kidney/pancreas transplant less than a year later. By the late 1990s, Cheri and Scott started their own family with the arrival of Jack and soon after Julia. Cheri practiced veterinary medicine for 20 years, and was a charter member of the Leawood Rotary Club.Cheri is survived by her devoted husband Scott, and beautiful children Jack and Julia; her mother Karen and father Robert (Buck) O’Brien, sisters Joyce (John) Craig and Kelly (Harry) Langdon, and nieces Mary Jane and Gina Mae Langdon; aunts and uncles, Mary (Paul) Kooyman, Ron (Elaine) Kooyman, Mary (Hugh) Tebault, Bill (Nancy) O’Brien, Earl Reid, and predeceased by her grandparents Eleanor and Casey Kooyman, aunt Barbara Reid and uncle Neil Kooyman; in-laws Marge and Ed Jones, sister-in-law Debbie (Doug) Engelland, brothers-in-law Doug and Tyler Jones; numerous nieces and nephews; as well as dear friends in Kansas, California and across the country.Funeral service for Cheri will be held at 2 pm on Monday, July 1st at the Church of the Resurrection, Wesley Chapel in Leawood, Kansas.
