Obituary The Sterling Bulletin

Nathaniel Barber was born in the state of New York April 3, 1821 and died at the late home near Sterling, Kansas, July 1, 1910, aged 89 years, 3 months and 28 days. His father died when he was six years old, and his mother being left with a large family, and without means to support them, he was put among strangers to work his own way. He was converted at the age of 18, and has since lived an exemplary Christian life. He was married to Sarah Pixley,Oct. 11, 1842, and moved from New York to Michigan in which state four children were born to them, three sons and one daughter; all are still living. He enlisted in the 21st Michigan Infantry in 1862, and served thirteen months when he was discharged on account of disability. He moved from Michigan to Missouri in 1866, from there to Kansas in 1875, and has since resided near Sterling continuously. His wife died Nov. 15, 1894 and he has since lived with his son D. M. Barber. He has been a great sufferer for the last eight years, being afflicted with cancer. He born his sufferings patiently, and was just waiting for death to come to his relief, having often expressed the desire to depart fro this life. He was a faithful husband, a kind father, and a devoted Christian. The funeral services were held at his son’s home on Sunday, at 2 p.m., conducted by Elder Fish of the Christian church.
