STERLING – Truman D. Burgess, 61, died Dec. 7, 2003, at his home in Sterling.He was born Jan. 25, 1942, at Lyons, the son of Weldon and Retha Smith Burgess. He was a 1960 graduate of Sterling High School. A lifetime Sterling resident, he was a retired employee for Farmers Co-op, Sterling.He belonged to the United Methodist Church, Sterling Saddle club and was a 4-H Leader, all at Sterling.On Aug. 4, 1962, he married Karan M. Dressel at Sterling. She survives.Other survivors include: a son, Lee and his wife Sheila Burgess, Sterling; a daughter, Shelly Burgess, Sterling; two brothers, Richard, Hays and Derald, Red Cloud, Neb.; a sister, Carole Workman, Sterling; and four grandchildren.He was preceded in death by a brother, Benny; and four sisters, Betty Scholle, Ilene Lewis, Colleen Lehr and Shirley Noce.Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Sterling United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Dennis Corbett and Dr. Lee Louderback presiding. Visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Sillin Funeral Home, Sterling. Burial will be in Sterling Community Cemetery.Memorials may be sent to Southwind Hospice, First Care or to the Sterling Saddle Club, all in care of the funeral home.

DEATH OF MRS. BURGESS
After an illness of but one week, Mrs. Jane Burgess passed away Monday evening at the farm where she had resided nearly twenty-nine years. Had she lived but two days longer, she would have reached the age of seventy. It was in 1903 her husband passed away at the home four and one-half miles southwest of this city. Pneumonia is given as the cause of her death at 6:15 p.m. on the 22nd. Four of the thirteen Burgess children have died. The mother’s funeral was held at the farm Wednesday at 1 p.m. Rev. Fahrney pastor of the Dunkard church, was assisted in the services by E. H. Tubbs of the Baptist denomination after which interment was made in the Sterling cemetery.

Jane Huddleston was born in Fayette County, West Virginia, December 2, 1842, and died at Sterling, Kansas, December 22, 1913, aged 71 years and 20 days. She was married to Henry Burgess in 1857 at Oak Hill, West Virginia. Thirteen children were born to this union. Nine of whom are still living. Mrs. A. J. Myers and Mrs. J. H. Morehead, Louisburg, Kansas; J.E. and W.C. Burgess, Hutchinson; Mrs. Conner and E.E. Burgess; H.G. Burgess, K.C., Kansas; Mrs. D.W. McFadden, Nickerson; and F.P. Burgess, Huntsville; all of whom were present at the time of her death. The husband passed away 10 years ago the 9th of last month. Mrs. Burgess was conscious to the last. She joined the Christian church in early life.

He was married to Jennie (Jane H.) Huddleston December 11, 1859. To this union were born 13 children, 8 sons and 5 daughters. A wife, 6 sons and 4 daughters survive him, all living in Reno County, but one son in Kansas City, two daughters near Louisburg, Kansas and one daughter near Payola, Kansas. He moved to Miami County, Kansas in the year of 1870; from there he moved to Reno County in 1884, and resided there until his death. His death was due to a liver complaint. All the children were at his bedside when he died, but one son and three daughters. It makes it seem so much sadder to know that the son Homer had just passed away only four months ago. The funeral was held in the M. E. Church at Sterling on Wednesday, November 11, 1903, conducted by Dr. D. D. Akin. The remains were interred in Cottonwood Cemetery. Burgert, 87, died Wednesday morning at the Golden Age Lodge where she had been a resident since 1965.She was born in Lawrence, the daughter of the Rev. Erastus and Emma Atkinson. She attended the Sabetha and Hiawatha schools, the University of Kansas and College at Huntington, Indiana. Following graduation from college, she served both as a teacher and principal in high schools at Bradgate, Iowa and McClouth, Kansas.She married A.L. Burgert, Sr. in 1921 at McClouth. They later lived in Sterling where he was president of the First National Bank. He preceded her in death in 1958 at Sterling.She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Sterling, the Sterling Sorosis Club, the American Legion Auxiliary, the Order of the Eastern Star, and other Sterling and Rice County organizations.Survivors include a son, Alfred L. Burgert, Sterling; a brother, Lloyd Atkinson, Sabetha; 3 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.A graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Sterling Cemetery with the Rev. Robert Docherty officiating. Burial will follow in the family mausoleum at Sterling. A. L. BURGERT BURIED MONDAY
A. L. Burgert, 67, Sterling businessman for thirty-two years, passed away last Friday at the Sterling Hospital. He had been ill for two days.
Prior to his retirement in 1947, Mr. Burgert was president of the First National Bank of Sterling. He started in the banking business at the Bank of McLouth in 1918. He was subsequently associated with a bank at LaHarpe, as cashier, before coming to Sterling in 1926 to join the First National as cashier. He served as president of the Sterling bank from 1931 to 1947.
During his nearly thirty years in the banking business, he was active in many civic and community projects. He served as treasurer of Sterling College for twenty-three years. He was a member of the College Board of Trustees for fifteen years, and was business manager for the College, following retirement from the bank, from 1947 to 1956. He was a former mayor of Sterling; past president of the Chamber of Commerce, and past president of the Sterling Lions club. He was affiliated with the American Legion for many years.
He was born in Gallatin, Mo., March 14, 1891. He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church and had served as a trustee of the Sterling church a number of years.
He is survived by his widow, Myrtle, one son, Alfred L. of Pittsburg; two sisters, Mrs. Maude Brassfield and Mrs. Lena Tharpe, both of Kansas City, Mo.; and three grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday from the Volkland Chapel at Hutchinson with Rev. Kenneth P. Smith and Rev. Alfred Spotts officiating. Temporary entombment was made at the Eastside Mausoleum in Hutchinson. Final resting place will be in a family mausoleum in the Sterling Cemetery.

Alfred Leland Burgert
Alfred L. Burgert, 79, of Pittsburg, died Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2003, at Mt. Carmel Regional Medical Center, following an illness.
He was born March 14, 1924, at Lawrence, to Alfred Leander and Myrtle Alma (Atkinson) Burgert. He grew up in Sterling. Following three years of military service during World War II, he attended and graduated from the law and business schools at the University of Kansas in Lawrence. He also received a lieutenant’s commission in the Army Reserve.
He married Betty Jane Koontz on Aug. 21, 1946, at Sterling. She survives of the home.
Mr. Burgert was admitted to the Kansas Bar in 1950 and immediately joined First State Bank of Pittsburg. In 1964, he graduated from the American Bankers Association’s Stonier Graduate School of Banking at Rutgers University at New Brunswick, N.J. He was a former president and chief executive officer of First State Bank & Trust Co., Pittsburg, from 1972 to 1989 and director of the bank from 1967 to 1990.
In 1967, he completed a year as president of the Kansas Bankers Association trust division. He also served several terms as a member of the KBA executive council. He was inducted into the KBA 50-year club in 1989 and was a 50-year member of the Kansas Bar Association. He also was a member of Pittsburg Lions Club and the Presbyterian churches. He was a past president of the Pittsburg Area Chamber of Commerce, the Lions Club, YMCA, Pittsburg State University Endowment Association and the Pittsburg Public Library Board. He was active in more than 30 United Way fund drives, including four years as co-chairman of the major gifts section and one term on the United Way board. He served several terms as an elder of the Presbyterian churches. He was a trustee, Sunday school teacher and church treasurer, all in Pittsburg churches. He served on the Mid-America board of trustees for 21 years and the Pittsburg Industrial Development Corp. at the time of his retirement. He also served on the board of the Friends of Axe Library and as a member of the PSU Athletic Advisory Board.
Additional survivors include one daughter, Maretta K. Jeuland of Chicago; two sons, Alfred L. Burgert of Asbury, Mo., and Philip L. Burgert of Oak Park, Ill.; and three grandchildren.
Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the Presbyterian Church with the Rev. David Schaller and the Rev. Patty Schaller officiating. Mr. Burgert’s body will be cremated following the service. Private family burial will be in Sterling Cemetery at Sterling at a later date. The family will receive friends following the services in the parlor at the Presbyterian Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Brenner Mortuary, 114 E. Fourth St.
