Tribute of Respect.

Mrs. Margaret G Ross, whose funeral took place on Friday of last week, was born at Carlisle, Cumberland County, Pa., March 7, 1837. Her parents moved to Morrow County, Ohio, when she was three years old.  She was married to Rev. John Sample Ross at her home in Ohio, July 4, 1854.  They moved to southeastern Iowa, where they were engaged in Christian work in the United Presbyterian church for a number of years.  From Iowa, they moved to the northern part of Kansas in 1880 and there engaged in missionary work.  Her husband died in 1887.  In1890 she moved with the younger members of her family to Sterling, where she has lived until the time of her death, February 18, 1898.

She was a woman of most worthy Christian character, unobtrusive in her manners, kindly and self-sacrificing in spirit, and ready for any good work- a valued member of the United Presbyterian Church.

All her living children were with her during her last days. Mr. Wilson Ross, Mrs. Lindsay, Harry, Amy, and Cora. Two of her sisters, Mrs. Thompson and Mrs. Balmer, and her son-in-law James Lindsay were present at the funeral.  She has many friends who will miss her, and who extend their sympathy to the family and relatives in this their deep sorrow.

OBITUARY

Helen Ross

Little Helen Ross, daughter of Dr. H. R. and Mrs. Mary Ross, passed from the home of her parents to Him who ‘gathers the lambs with his arm and carries them in his bosom,’ on Friday, Nov. 15th, at 2:45 p.m.  On December 23d, she would have reached the end of her fourth year. The disease which ended her days on earth was “multiple neuritis.”  The attack was in acute form. She was sick less than four days. She was a sweet, beautiful child, and filled a large place in the hearts of her parents and many others. To the natural sorrow attending such a death, there was the added poignancy of the absence of the Dr. from home at the time of her sickness. He was not able to reach home until the second day after her death. The funeral service was held in the United Presbyterian church on Monday at 2:30  p.m. conducted by the pastor, assisted by Rev. J. U. Brush, of Saxman.

The beautiful tribute of sympathy that was extended to Dr. and Mrs. Ross in this great bereavement was very touching indeed and was much appreciated. The sorrow of these parents was soothed and alleviated by the rich comforts of Christ. These verses may express something of their resignation to His will.

“Lat night our little child lay dead, In agony we knelt and said, O God what have we done, Or in what wise offended THee, That thou didst take away our little girl.  Last night as our dear babe lay dead, Before our eyes a vision spread, Of things that might have been – Licentious riot, cruel strife, forgotten prayers, A wasted life, dark red with sin. Then with sweet music in the air, We saw another vision there, A Shepherd in whose keep, A little lamb, our little child, of worldly wisdom undefiled, Lay fast asleep.  Last night as our dear babe lay dead, In these two messages we read, A wisdom manifest, And tho our hearts are all bereft, we are content, To Him, we bow, who knoweth best.”  C. H. S.

SK Bulletin – June 1, 1961 – Caroline Edith Weede – Caroline Edith Weede was the fifth of nine children of James C. and Mary E. Weede. She was born on her father’s farm near Van Meter, Iowa, March 1, 1887.  She moved with her parents to Summerfield, Kansas, in 1900 and to Walton, Kansas in 1910, where she was married June 12, 1918, to a college classmate, Rev. William H. Ross of Smith Center, Kansas. Four daughters were born to this union. The second of these died in infancy.

She was a graduate of high school at Summerfield, and of Sterling College, Sterling. She taught school in the country three and a half years and three years in high school. As preparation for work in the home, she took four months of training in nursing. In preparation for work on the foreign mission field, she took a summer’s work in Moody Bible Institute and several weeks in studying phonetics as an aid to learning the Urdu and Punjabi languages which she was later to speak.

She went with her husband as a missionary to that part of India which is now Pakistan in the fall of 1918 and spent 36 years there. After a year in language study, they took up evangelistic work. She sold, year by year, on the mission field thousands of gospel portions and other religious books.

Throughout her life, she was active in children’s work in the church. Following their retirement from the mission field, she worked with him in the pastorate in Olathe, Colo., and Ewing, Nebr. until the final summons came May 24, 1961, from the Master whom she served.

Ross, Amy Almira

Name: Ross, Amy Almira
Burial Date: 1909, 05/05
Age at Death: 32
Plot Location: 409 G

Daughter of : Rev. John Sample Ross and Margaret G. (Bender) Ross
Notes: Sister of Dr. Harry Reath Ross,  Wilson Ross,  Irena Ross Lindsay, and Cora Cynthia Ross Black.

OBITUARY

When Miss Amy Ross breather her spirit out last Monday night in her sister’s home at Viola, Kansas, there passed into the heavenly world a soul beautified with the beauty of Christ. Heaven is richer and earth is poorer by the transfer of this soul to the spirit world. Miss Ross was born April 30, 1877, at Birmingham, Iowa.  Sickness some fifteen years ago left her with heart lesion, which incapacitated her for heavy physical work. She graduated from Cooper College in 1902.  She had chosen the foreign mission field for her life work but the Lord chose his field for her and kept her in the homeland.  The affliction which ended in her death on Monday, May 3, 1909, has lasted six years.  She has been almost helpless physically since the disease commenced its work. A great part of that time she spent in Sterling at the home of her brother Dr. Ross, and at the Sterling Hospital.  She has also spent considerable time with her brother Wilson Ross and her sisters Mrs. Lindsay and Mrs. Black.  Wherever she was she gave herself to mission work for and with her Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Her life has been like Mary’s box of precious ointment – a blessed aroma in every place she has been whether in the hospital or in the homes, and that aroma has filled very many hearts. By her prayers, her sweet Christ-like spirit, her kind words, and letters, she bore a blessed message from Christ to many souls, Tho a shut-in for six years, there was really no limitation to her service for Christ. She was accustomed to sending this little verse in many of her letters. She had derived much comfort from its counsel and she wanted everyone to share that comfort with her.

A Cure for the Blues

The little sharp vexations

The briers that catch and fret,

Why not leave all with the Helper

Who has never failed us yet.

Tell Him about the heartache

Tell Him the longing too

Tell Him the baffled purpose

When we scarce know what to do,

Then leaving all our weakness

With the on divinely strong

Forget we bore the burden

And carry away the song.    By Phillip Brooks

Her funeral service was held in the United Presbyterian Church on Wednesday, at 2:30 p.m., conducted by the pastor assisted by Dr. Spencer. The casket was covered with beautiful floral offerings from her college class, the hospital, and many other friends. The last word she was heard to utter was,  “I received it yesterday, the welcome. plaudit “well done, good and faithful servant. Blessed are the dead that die in the Lord.  Yea saith the Spirit, they do rest from their labors and their works do follow them.
