STERLING KANSAS BULLETIN OBITUARY 01/02/1913
A SUDDEN DEATH IN COUNTRY
Francis M. Spangler Died Suddenly Last Thursday Evening–Funeral Held Saturday
Another old soldier has answered to the last roll call in the name of Francis M. Spangler. Death has claimed one more of the old boys and their number has become greatly decreased in this territory. At the age of 77 years he was taken last Thursday evening, December 26 in the home of a nephew, B. J. Ragland, fourteen miles southwest of Sterling.
Together with Walter and Earl Ragland and John Canning, Mr. Spangler was seated at the supper table when he became strangled. In their attempt to relieve his suffering those present were entirely unsuccessful, and before medical aid could be secured the patient had passed away. Two sisters and three brothers survive the deceased. He had no children. Rev. Rutledge, pastor of the Methodist church at Huntsville, conducted funeral services Saturday morning at the Ragland farm and as the body was brought to Sterling, members of the G.A.R. accompanied it to the last resting place.
Francis Marion Spangler was born near Terra Haute, Indiana, September 2, 1835. His life work had been that of a farmer. He was for nearly forty years a resident of Kansas, being one of the first settlers in Medford township, Reno county. Four years’ service as a member of 107th Illinois infantry was his army record and he was a member of the Sterling Meade Post. “Uncle Marion” as he was commonly known, had a most kindly feeling for all and had many friends and acquaintances. He is known to have missed but ‘one Memorial Day service at this point, and that of the past year, owing to his feeble condition. It was during the war his nerves were shattered and this affliction continued thru life making him an invalid more than forty years. Since the death of his wife nearly ten years ago, he had made his home with his nephew, Mr. Ragland, where death occurred. For nearly 35 years he had been a faithful member of the Methodist church.
Francis M Spangler was born in September 1836 in Indiana, his father, Joseph, was 39 and his mother, Margaret, was 34. He married Mary E Bonser ( Boss Conrow) in 1891 when he was 55 years old. He died in December 1912 having lived a long life of 76 years.
His wife Mary passed away in 1903 at the age of 68. They had been married 12 years.
