STERLING KANSAS BULLETIN OBITUARY

D. B. STERETT

David Boyd Sterett died at his home on Ninth Street, Sterling, Thursday, May 4, 1905 at 10 o’clock. He was born near Xenia, O, Dec. 21 1836. When but a lad, his father emigrated to Indiana and finally to Iowa, Des Moines County, about 1850, where he grew to manhood under those influences that developed so many loyal hearts responsive to their country’s call in the days of civil strife.  The subject of this sketch answered, Ready! when volunteers were called for, and we find him a member of Co. L, 1st Iowa Cavalry Volunteers, who on March 26, 1864, enlisted for three years service.  He saw hard service in the south for a time and was among those chosen to establish order in Texas when the war closed.  He was given his honorable discharge at Austin, Texas, Feb. 15, 1866.  After the strife of arms he capitulated to the charms of Miss Sarah Isabel Cavin, to whom he was married in 1870.  To this union were born two sons and three daughters. In 1881, Mr. Sterett moved his family to Jewell County, Kansas, when the eldest son died in 1887. The remaining children survive the father – all of them a comfort to their widowed mother.  The are Mrs. Sadie Smith, of Argonia, Kan., Mrs. Mary Connery, of Sand Creek, Oklahoma, David Robb Sterett, once a favorite salesman in Sterling, now a third year student in the Kansas Medical College, Topeka, and Miss Lulu, well and favorably known as a teacher in Rice County.  Mr. Sterett united with the Reformed Presbyterian Church at Sharon, Ia., under Dr. McDonald, in whose congregation he was elected a Deacon, serving in this office until his removal to Holmwood, Kans. in which congregation he was elected elder in 1888. Mr. Sterett moved to Rice County, Kansas in 1895, where he continued in the active work on the farm until 1901, at which time he moved into Sterling where he has lived a quiet, godly life, highly respected for his beautiful Christian character, and greatly beloved by his family. Five grandchildren cheered his later years. He had not been robust for several years, but was at his daily work until about four weeks ago. He suffered greatly in his last sickness, but passed in triumph to his reward, full of faith and deeply mourned by a wide circle of friends.
