STERLING NONAGENARIAN DIES AFTER LONG ILLNESS

Sterling, Kan., April 10. – Mrs. Ira Stubbs, 90, a resident of this community for nearly half a century, is dead at her home here after a lingering illness.

The aged husband survives. Mr. and Mrs. Stubbs observed their 69th wedding anniversary at Christmas time. Seven children survive, a daughter, Mrs. D. D. Potter and two sons, Frank and John Stubbs of Sterling, two sons in St. Louis, a son in La Junta, Col., and a son in Ohio.

She lived in Topeka from 1950 to 1979 and worked for Josten’s American Yearbook Co. She moved to Columbus, Ohio, then returned to Topeka in 1982 and worked in food service department of Washburn Univ. several years.
She married Merle E. Stubbs in 1948 at Manhattan.Mrs. Stubbs was cremated. Inurnment will be in Sterling Community Cemetery.

Marie Elstun Stubbs

Sterling -Marie Elstun Stubbs, 91, died June 26, 2000, at Sterling Presbyterian Manor.

She was born Oct. 11, 1908, at Preston, the daughter of E. A. and Peachie (Payne) Haynes. A Sterling resident since 1934, she was a homemaker.

She belonged to United Methodist Church and the American Legion Auxiliary, both at Sterling.

On June 16, 1928, she married John Thomas Elstun at Great Bend. He died July 23, 1955. On Dec. 17, 1957, she married Percy E. Stubbs at McPherson. He died April 8, 1982.

Survivors include a son, Wallace Elstun, Vancouver, Wash.; a stepson, Jack Stubbs, Sterling; a brother, Sam Haynes, Ellenton, Fla.; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Archie and Joe Haynes; and a sister, Eileen Haynes.

Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Sillin Funeral Home, Sterling, with the Rev. James Graves presiding. Friends may call from 1 to 5 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Sterling Community Cemetery.

Memorials may be sent to the United Methodist Church, Sterling, in care of the funeral home.

STERLING, Kan. — Jack R. Stubbs, 84, died Saturday, Feb. 12 in Sterling, Kan. Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 19 at Sterling Evangelical Bible Church with Rim Elsner officiating. Burial will be at Sterling Community Cemetery with full military honors.

He was born Aug. 29, 1920 to Percy and Ethel Stubbs in Sterling and graduated from Sterling High School in 1938. He graduated from Sterling College in 1942 and was a retired farmer and dairyman. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and married Frances Boyce Dec. 10, 1941 in Sterling. He was a member of Sterling Evangelical Bible Church, former president of the school board, and served on the Walnut Township election board.

He was preceded in death by his wife and a brother.

He is survived by two sons, James Stubbs of Anchorage, Alaska and Philip Stubs of Sterling; two daughters, Alicia Gardner of Midland and Linda Hoffman of Lawrence, Kan.; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and four stepgreat-grandchildren.
