Lyle D. Renollet, 65, died May 17, 2013 at Hospice House in Hutchinson, KS.  He was born July 21, 1947 at Sterling the son of Roy & Anna Belle Fenwick Renollet.  He was a lifetime Sterling resident.  He retired from the Sterling Farmers Coop Union after 35 years.

He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church of Sterling, Lions Clubs of Sterling and Lyons and the American Bowling Congress.

He is survived by four brothers, Roy Renollet Jr. of Skiatook, Okla., Rod Renollet of Hutchinson, Gene Renollet of Platte City, Mo. and Bob Renollet of Lyons.  16 Nieces and nephews, many great nieces and nephews and several great-great-nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Henry, sister-in-law Joy and niece Tammi Laverantz.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, May 22, 2013 at the United Presbyterian Church in Sterling with Rev. Seth Svaty officiating.  Burial will be in the Sterling Community Cemetery.

STERLING – Mary Alice Johnson, 91, passed away April 24, 2013, in Leawood. She was born Aug. 18, 1921, in McCracken, to Samuel and Della VanWarmer Skinner. Having moved to Sterling as a young girl she attended the local grade school and high school. Later in life she received her Associates Degree from Hutchinson Community Junior College.

On Aug. 10, 1941, she married Cecil J. Johnson at the church parsonage in Nickerson. They began their life on a farm east of Sterling, where she resided until her recent stay at Grace Gardens Assisted Living Facility.

In addition to her duties as a farm wife, she gave piano lessons to many Rice and Reno County children. For sixty years she helped with all aspects of music at Midland Community Church, primarily playing the piano and organ for worship services.

Through the years she was a member of Sterling Music Club, Midland Lucky Clovers 4-H Club leader, Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), organized the maiden chapter of Children of the American Revolution (CAR) in Sterling, volunteered at the Sterling Presbyterian Manor, and was active in Midland Church Women’s Fellowship. She belonged to countless bridge clubs in Sterling, Nickerson and Hutchinson.

Preceding her in death were her son, First Lieutenant Phil David Johnson in 1969;  her husband, Cecil J. Johnson, Nov. 2, 2002; and sister, Gail Wilkey, Feb. 7, 2010, all of Sterling.

Survivors include: daughters, Nancy and husband Mitch Borota, Leawood, Mary Jo and husband Doug Cress, Sterling, Colo.; grandchildren, J.J. and husband Jerry Schenkelberg, Omaha, Neb., Bret Borota and wife Sarah, Overland Park, Emily Cress, Kansas City; great-grandchildren, Stryker J. and Tori J. Schenkelberg, Omaha, Neb., and Brooks Borota, Overland Park; sister, Nancy Ann Oat, Norwich, Conn.; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, May 3, 2013, at Midland United Church of Christ, rural Sterling, with burial to follow in Sterling Cemetery. Revs. Will Best and Judy Conners will be officiating. Visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m. Thursday, May 2, 2013, with the family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m. at Birzer Funeral Home, Sterling. Memorials may be sent to the Midland United Church of Christ or your local hospice, in care of the funeral home.

Alfred Lewis Spotts Obituary

Alfred Lewis Spotts was born on May 8, 1919, in Milford, Mich., to George and Lena Schaefer Spotts. Lena died in childbirth. George married Kate Carmichael, and they raised Al and his twin brother, Frank. Al passed away at Vista Grande Inn in Cortez, Colo. on Tuesday, April 16, 2013, at age 93.

After growing up mainly in Pontiac, Mich., and spending summers in Hope, Ind., Al graduated from Michigan State Normal College in Ypsilanti, Mich., in 1941, and Pittsburgh-Zenia Seminary (now Pittsburgh Theological Seminary) in 1944. He married Martha Jean Creswell in April 1941.

Ordained as a Presbyterian minister, Al served churches in West View, Penn.; New Brighton, Penn.; Sterling, Kan. (1951-1971); Oswego, Kan.; and Columbus, Kan.; and served one year as administrator of the Kansas City Presbyterian Manor. Al retired in 1984 but continued to stay active in the ministry, serving as interim pastor in several churches in Kansas and Colorado (including Montezuma Valley Presbyterian Church in 1988-89 and Rico Community Church in 1994) and filling in as needed for many years.

In 1960, Al served as moderator of the Synod of Kansas. He served on the board of trustees of Sterling College, Sterling, Kan., and was honored with a Doctor of Divinity Degree from Sterling College in 1961. The Sterling Presbyterian Church made him Pastor Emeritus in 2002. In 2006, he and Jean moved to Vista Mesa Assisted Living in Cortez, and they moved to Vista Grande Inn in 2010.

Al and Jean had two daughters and six sons. Joe and John died in June 2008. Jean died in February 2012. Al is survived by his twin brother, Frank, Port Huron, Mich. Surviving sons include Al and wife, Maggie Steptoe, Louisville, Ky.; Andy, Chicago, Ill.; Jim, Mariposa, Calif., and Tim, Concord, Calif. Surviving daughters are Ann and husband, Chuck Haspels, Cortez,, and Jan and husband, Jim McHenry, Houston, Tex. Grandchildren are Tamara Haspels, Portland, Ore.; Molly Haspels Wickstrom and husband, Scott Wickstrom, Arvada, Colo.; Chad Haspels and wife, Jennifer, Pagosa Springs, Colo.; Sarah Spotts and husband, Kevin Covey, Flagstaff, Ariz.; Kathryn Spotts and husband, Nick Lienesch, Minneapolis, Minn.; Libby Spotts, Minneapolis, Minn.; Celeste Spotts, Glenwood, Iowa; and James, Joel, and Josh McHenry, Houston, Tex. Great-grandchildren are Ryley and Calvan Wickstrom, Arvada, Colo.

A memorial service will be held at the United Presbyterian Church, Sterling, Kan., with burial at the Sterling Cemetery.

STERLING – Velda Marie Plett, devoted wife, mother and grandmother, 81, died April 12, 2013, at her home in Sterling. She was born May 5, 1931, in Windom, the daughter of Elmer and Beulah Hylton Mills. She graduated from Windom High School. A resident of Sterling since 1954, she was a homemaker.

She belonged to the Sterling Women’s Bowling Association, was a bloodmobile volunteer and election board volunteer.

 On June 7, 1948, she married LeRoy K. Plett in Minneapolis. He died Aug. 12, 1994. Survivors include a son, John Plett, Sterling; two daughters, Sherry Trafford, Vinton, Iowa, and Jenny Pralle, Bremen; a brother, Vernon Mills, McPherson; a sister, Veola Carlson, McPherson; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Ramona Mehringer; an infant son, Bobby Eugene Plett; and two grandsons, Eric Wayne Pralle and Mathew Mehringer.

 Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 20, 2013, at Birzer Funeral Home, Sterling, with the Rev. Kendal Connor presiding. At her request, her body was donated to KU Medical Center. Burial will be in Sterling Community Cemetery at a later date. Memorials may be sent to the Sterling Cemetery Fund, in care of Birzer Funeral Home, Sterling.

She was born May 5, 1931, in Conway, KS, the daughter of Elmer and Beulah Hylton Mills.

Velda was united in marriage to LeRoy K. Plett on June 7, 1948, at Minneapolis, KS. He passed away on August 14, 1944.

Velda was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother.

Mary Ann Zimmerman passed away April 1 in Colorado Springs, CO; where she had been a resident since 1985. She had just celebrated her 90th birthday with friends and family on March 8th. Mary Ann was born and raised in McPherson, KS to parents Andrew William and Mayme Bremyer. For years she returned to McPherson to visit family and reunite with high school friends. She attended Lyndenwood College and Kansas State University, where she began a life long association with Delta Delta Delta Sorority, and also met her husband, Ross Zimmerman. They were married at Riverside Church in New York City prior to his naval deployment to Europe during WWII. Following the war, Mary Ann and Ross farmed and ranched in rural Kansas before residing in Sterling, KS. Mary Ann was active in the community; taking leadership roles with United Methodist Church Women, PEO, Red Cross Hospital Auxiliary, and many other cultural and philanthropic organizations. After moving to Colorado Springs, she and her husband participated in Veteran Car Club of America, driving their 1926 Cadillac on tours throughout the United States. Mary Ann loved bridge, a good party, traveling around the world, and dancing. Most of all she loved her husband Ross and her Church. She was preceded in death by her son Michael, and her husband, Ross. She is survived by her son, Marc Zimmerman and daughter, Margo Allenbach, granddaughter, Amy Hladik and husband Jason, and great-grandchildren Ryder (2 years old), Penny Anne (4 months). A celebration of Mary Ann’s life will be at the First United Methodist Church, where she had been a member for many years, on Friday, April 5th at 11:00AM. Lydia Margaret Matthew, 94, died March 28, 2013, at Emeritus at Elm Grove, Hutchinson. She was born March 30, 1918, in McPherson County, to Peter and Anna (Goering) Krehbiel.

Lydia graduated from Burrton High School in 1936. She worked as a cook for the Sterling school district and as a secretary for Great American Life Insurance Company.

On April 23, 1960, she married Ernest Matthew in Hutchinson. He died Dec. 20, 1984.

She is survived by: brother, John Krehbiel and wife Ella of Pretty Prairie; many nieces, nephews; and great-nieces and nephews. Lydia was preceded in death by parents; brothers, Philip, Peter, Daniel Krehbiel; sisters, Kathryn Parker and Anna Stucky.

Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Monday, April 1, 2013, at Elliott Chapel, with Pastor Luke Helmuth officiating. There will be a private family burial. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday with family to receive friends from 5 to 6 p.m. at Elliott Chapel, Hutchinson.

STERLING – Chy Joseph Miller, 40, died March 7, 2013, at his residence, Sterling. He was born March 27, 1972, in Sterling, to Joe Pat and Sheila Gum Miller.

He graduated from Sterling High School in 1990, received his paramedic Associates Degree from Hutchinson Community College, and received a Bachelors Degree from Central Christian College, McPherson. He was currently pursuing his Master’s Degree in EMS Education. A lifelong resident of Sterling, he was the EMS program director and department chair for public safety at Hutchinson Community College, HCC EMS is one of the largest EMS education programs in the State of Kansas. Annually, Chy’s department trains and educates nearly 1,000 individuals in both initial and continuing EMS education. Chy has served in this position since late 2005. Chy became involved in EMS in 1989, by attending EMT class while still in high school in his hometown. He then completed paramedic at Hutchinson Community College in 1992. After paramedic school, Chy continued his involvement with Rice Co. EMS while also serving departments such as Arkansas City Fire/EMS, McPherson EMS, Pratt EMS, and Barton Co. Community College.

He belonged to the Rice County Ducks Unlimited Board Member, Silver Sponsor, served on the Region III EMS Council Board of Directors, BEMS Instructor Development Task Force, BEMS Educator Curriculum Review Workgroup, and chairs the KEMSA Educator’s Society.

Survivors include his mother, Shelia Miller, Eureka Springs, Ark.; son, Elijah; three daughters, Taylor Miller, Zoe Miller, and Lydia Miller, all of Sterling; sister, Loranne and Doug McNutt, Sterling; and a niece, Sophia McNutt, Sterling.

He was preceded in death by his father, Pat Miller.

She was the daughter of Walter Ernest and Pearl (Carson) Fulton.

She was a 1952 graduate of Sterling High School. On June 1, 1952, she married Cecil Ray Lewis in Sterling. The couple recently celebrated 60 years of marriage.

In 1945, she moved to Sterling and after her marriage to Cecil she lived in Oklahoma, Illinois and Great Bend from 1959 to 2004, before moving to Ponca City, Okla.. in 2004 after Cecil’s retirement. She was a homemaker.

Mrs. Lewis was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church in Great Bend.

Survivors include her husband, Cecil Ray Lewis, Ponca City, Okla.; a son, Troy Lewis (Diana), Ponca City, Okla.; two daughters, Cecilia Skiles (Robert) and Cynthia Olson (Fred), both of Olathe; a brother, Eddie Fulton (Phyllis), Sterling; two sisters, Helen Henry, Sterling and Peggy McQuin, Saint Johns, Fla.; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Robert Fulton.
