Glenna Mae Yoakum 1918 – 2008
Glenna Mae Yoakum, 90, of Great Bend, died Aug. 22 at Riverside Village, Wichita. She was born Feb. 9, 1918, in rural Sterling, the daughter of Harry O. and Florence Bennett Horton. She married Jack K. Yoakum on March 5, 1955, at Sterling. He died Dec. 30, 1993. A Great Bend resident since 1970, she was an elementary schoolteacher in Hutchinson and Great Bend. She graduated from Sterling High School in 1936, attended Sterling College and received her teaching degree from Emporia State Teachers College.
Mrs. Yoakum was a member of First United Methodist Church, Great Bend; Daughters of the American Revolution; Retired Teachers of Barton County; and Epsilon Sigma Alpha International-Zeta Gamma Chapter.
Survivors include a sister-in-law, Jean Yoakum Bradfield, Hugoton; two nieces, Mary Horton Knecht and husband Sam of Wichita, and Janet Bradfield White and husband Ed of Moscow, Kan.; three nephews, Harry Horton and wife Tammy of Sewell, N.J., Joe Horton and wife Joyce of Tribune and Shelby Bradfield and wife Maggie of Santa Fe, N.M.; four great-nephews, three great-great-nieces and three great-great-nephews. A brother, Kenneth “Sparky” Horton, and a sister, Pauline Horton, preceded her in death.
A graveside service will be at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at Sterling Community Cemetery, Sterling, with the Rev. Gary Brooks officiating. Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesday at Birzer Funeral Home, Sterling, with the family present. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Sterling College Teachers’ Scholarship Fund, in care of the funeral home.
