Thomas Northrup was the son of Elijah Northrup, 1765-1825 and Amy Williams (daughter of Thomas and Mary Williams of Lee, Mass, 1765-1819. Elijah Northrup died in LeRoy, Genesee County, N.Y. In 1850, on the Town of Pavilion Federal Census, Marshall Smead was living as a farmer with the household of his grand daughter and her husband, Ellen and Charles Noble. This farm was next door to the farm of his daughter Polly and her husband Samuel Starr.

From the records of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, Leroy (NY) as noted in the LeRoy Gazette 1840-1869:

The marriage of Marshall Smead to Mary M. Northrup on January 29, 1851 was performed by the Rev. George McKnight.

According to the will of Marshall Smead, this marriage was his second. He left a bequest to his daughter Polly Smead who married Samuel Starr, as well as a bequest to his granddaughter Ellen M. Noble who had married Charles Noble.

From “A History of the Starr Family of New England, from the Ancestor Dr. Comfort Starr, of Ashford, County of Kent, England who Emigrated to Boston, Mass….” by Burgis Pratt Starr, 1879, p. 438, the first wife of Marshall Smead, and Polly Smead’s mother was Sally Eddy.

From the records of the Methodist Episcopal Church, LeRoy (NY):

Mary Smead was a member of this church from 1851 to 1870, Marshall Smead died in 1853. and Mary Smead married Robert M. Abbe Feb. 14, 1860.

A photograph of Col. Robert Morrison Abbe – 96586282 – has been posted on a memorial made for him prior to the one unknowingly created for him in 2015.

In one part of the 1860 Le Roy, New York Federal Census, Robert Abbe and Mary Abbe were living in a boarding house, while Mary’s mother Lovina and her younger sister Cecilia were living together in another dwelling in Le Roy.

Mary’s younger sister Cecilia Northrup appears on the 1870 and 1880 Federal Le Roy NY Census as the housekeeper/sister-in-law for Robert, Mary and Mary Abbe.

From the LeRoy Gazette, dated January 10, 1900:

“Death of Mrs. Mary M. Abbe: Mrs. Mary M. Abbe, wife of the late Colonel Robert M. Abbe, formerly of this village, died at the home of her daughter Mrs. Charles F. Witter… Rochester, on Monday afternoon…Mrs. Abbe, when quite young was united in marriage to Marshall Smead of Pavilion, and some time after his death became the wife of Colonel Robert M. Abbe, late of this village…About nine years ago Mrs. Abbe sold her residence here and removed to Rochester to live with her daughter…The deceased was about 82 years of age…The remains were taken to Pavilion this morning and interred in the family lot besides those of her first husband.”

Two separate findagrave entries have been posted for Mary’s first husband Marshall Smead, by two different people; both are very important and informative, so I simply attached her to both.

The death date of Matty (a/k/a Mitty a/k/a Mary M. [per will of Marshall Smead, filed in Genesee County, NY, Oct. 17, 1853]) Smead, daughter of Marshall Smead and Mary (Northrup) Smead should read d. 27 Dec 1853.
