FORMER SHERIFF DEAD
A telegram Monday to Mrs. C. Rakestraw stated that her brother. W. L. Smith, had died at Hoffman, Oklahoma. No one here had know of his sickness and the news was a shock to his many friends. That night, S. Rakestraw accompanied George Seaward of Great Bend to Hoffman to attend the funeral.
Deceased had come from Indiana to Sterling in the early 1870s and served as sheriff of Rice county several years ago. The older residents well remember the name of W. L. Smith. Since going to Oklahoma, he was postmaster at Hoffman four years, and it is there his wife and one son are now living, while another son is located at Tyrone. The father reached the age of nearly 74. He was a brother-in-law of J. C. Seaward of this city, and the gentlemen both served in the 13th Indiana Infantry, Co. E., three years during the Civil war.
When Mr. Smith came to this county, he homesteaded the quarter section of land where Hazel Dell school house now stands, northwest of this city. The duties of sheriff in those days were a very different proposition from the present, criminal cases being quite common. Two terms of such service were rendered with efficiency and courage. In 1888 they returned from Kansas to Indiana, going several years ago to Oklahoma. Since living at Hoffman, their golden wedding anniversary was celebrated in 1910. A married daughter is now at Youngstown, Ohio and one son has passed away. Mrs. Smith’s name was formerly Miss Margaret E. Seaward, and her husband was a charter member of the Sterling Odd Fellows.
