LYONS — Viola Lynette Rhoades Schirer, 73, home economics teacher and librarian, died Sunday (Dec. 31, 2000) at Sterling Presbyterian Manor.

She was born March 12, 1927, to John Timothy and Grace (Tawney) Rhoades Jr. in WaKeeney. They preceded her in death. She married Robert V. Schirer June 5, 1976, in Sterling. He survives.

She was a longtime resident of Rice County, having lived in Lyons, Sterling, and Alden. She graduated from Kansas City Bible College and Sterling College and received her master’s degree from Emporia State. She formerly taught home economics at Burdett High School and Ashland High School, was a librarian at Dodge City High School and reference librarian at Sterling College. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Lyons.

Other survivors include two sisters, Margaret Shelton of Phillipsburg and Shirley Taylor of Grant, Neb.; and four nephews.

She also was preceded in death by a niece and a nephew.

Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Sillin Funeral Home in Lyons with family greeting friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church in Lyons with the Rev. Gary Karas officiating.

Burial will be in Sterling Community Cemetery.

Memorials have been established with Sterling College and Central Baptist Seminary in care of Sillin Funeral Home, 214 West Ave. South, Lyons, KS 67554.
