Amariah Chandler Russ Obituary
Amariah Chandler Russ was born in Gouveneur, St. Lawrence County, N.Y., July the 4th, 1842, and died at his home near Sterling, Kansas, March 22, 1920, at the age of 77 years 8 months and 18 days.
At the call of his country, during the Civil War, Mr. Russ enlisted in the 112 Regiment, Co. I, N.Y. Volunteers, at Jamestown, N.Y.; August 28, 1862. And was honorably discharged at Raleigh, N.C., June 13, 1865.
He was united in marriage to Helen Mae Skinner, at Brockton, N.Y., Nov. 13, 1866.
In the spring of 1877, he left his native-state and with his family came to the state of Kansas, locating temporarily at Marquette in the month of April. The following year he settled on a homestead about 8 miles from this town where he remained 11 years, when he moved to Little River. After 10 years residence at this place he moved to Sterling, where he has resided the last 21 years of his life.
The deceased was converted at the age of 14 years and united with the M. E. church, in which he has lived a faithful, consistent, and devout Christian life. He was granted a license to preach as a local preacher about the year 1893, at Little River. And in due time completed the required Course of Study and was ordained a deacon in the Methodist Episcopal church. Brother Russ used this office with credit to himself and honor to the church, which had given him this authority.
He is survived by three sons and two daughters as follows: Albert C, Ada C. Russ,…(can’t read the names) Marshall of Sterling.
The funeral services were held at the home the following Wednesday conducted by W. J. Barron, a former pastor, and his mortal remains laid to rest beside his companion, who preceded him into the beyond nearly two years ago, in the Sterling Cemetery.
