 Helen S. Proffitt ALDEN – Helen S. Proffitt, 91, died Jan. 1, 2009, at Presbyterian Manor, Sterling. She was born Jan. 20, 1917, in Sterling, to Ellis Melvin and Ruth Maude Goudy Thornbury.She was a lifetime Sterling and Alden resident. She was a homemaker and employee of Prairie Flower Craft Shop in Alden.She attended Sterling schools thru her Junior year, graduating from Pratt High School.She belonged to United Methodist Church. She was a member of United Methodist Women, E.H.U., TAB Club, Alden Pride Committee, and was a 4-H Leader, all of Alden. She was a Thrift Shop volunteer in Lyons.On Feb. 18, 1940, she married Harold H. Proffitt in Sterling. He died Nov. 18, 2007. Survivors include a son, Arlen “Butch” Proffitt, Hutchinson; daughter, Diana C. Graf, Onaga; sister-in-law, Ola Thornbury, Elk City, Okla.; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a great-granddaughter, Kelsey Brewer; three brothers, Bob Thornbury, John Thornbury, Roy Frederick; five sisters, Ina Kronvall, Velma German, Dorthea Rollins, Luella Smith and Alice Manwarren. Visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m. Friday at Birzer Funeral Home, Sterling, with family present from 5 to 7 p.m. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 3, 2009, at United Methodist Church, Alden. Burial will be in Sterling Community Cemetery, Sterling.
