Walter Adkins McFerrin was born on September 7, 1901, in Colfax, Jasper County, Iowa, his father, Alvin, was 34 and his mother, Cora, was 28. He had two daughters with Mildred Margaret Carter between 1924 and 1928. He died having lived for more than 100 years. He died on May 12, 2003, in Sterling, Kansas, at the age of 101, and was buried there.
Walter A. McFerrin, was 26 and wife Mildred, was 25 when they became foster parents for Joan Burkhart and her sister, Joy, who lived with the McFerrin couple.
The McFerrin couple reared the girls and assisted many other local youth in Sterling. Through the Joan Burkhart scholarship given to a graduating senior girl at Sterling High School many were able to attend a college of their choice.
The McFerrins were blessed with a long life in which to serve others.
