John W. Mahoney, a lifetime resident of Sterling, died Wednesday, June 18, 1997, at Sterling Presbyterian Manor at the age of 76.
He was born Dec. 17, 1920, in Reno County the son of Florence and Estella Canning Mahoney. He was a retired corrosion technician for Enron Corporation.
He was a member of the Alden United Methodist Church, the Triumph Friendship Club, Triumph Community Supper Club, Sunflower Camping club, Mid-K’s Campers, Holiday Ramblers, Fore Travel Motorcade Club, the American Travel Motorcade Association, the American Corrosion Technician Association and the American Legion. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II.
On June 8, 1944, he married Edna R. Enloe at Shreveport, LA. She died Dec. 20, 1994. On July 14, 1996, he married Trudy Sheridan at Miami, Okla.
Survivors include a son, John Jr., West Burlington, Iowa; a daughter, Donna Corman, Chesterfield, Mo.; four stepsons, James Cunningham, Russell; John Cunningham, Gary Cunningham and Mark Cunningham, all of Springfield, Mo.; a stepdaughter, Cynthia Tommon, Springfield, Mo.; two sisters, Doris Tener and Goldie Proffitt, both of Sterling; three grandchildren, 14 step-grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and a step-fret-grandchild.
Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Sillin Funeral Home, Sterling, with the Rev. Don Enders officiating. Burial was in the Sterling Community Cemetery.
Memorials may be sent to Sterling Presbyterian Manor or to Hutchinson Hospital, both in care of the funeral home.
