D. R. Gossman Died Sunday
One of the Oldest Settlers of THis Community Passed Away at His Home near Saxman
Dirk Richard Gossman was born at Struckhold, Germany, March 6, 1848, and died May 18, 1924, at his home near Saxman, Kansas, at the age of 76 years 2 months and 12 days. He left his home in Germany in 1869 and came to America and settled in Illinois where he lived for seven years. He came to Kansas in the spring of 1876 and settled on the farm where he made his home until his death.
He received his education in the schools in Germany and at the age of fourteen was confirmed in the Luthern Evangelical church, and has continued a member of that church during his whole life.
On April 10th, 1876 he was married to Miss Minnie Rose, To this union was born seven children: Henry, who died when seventeen years old, Lewis, John Julia, who died when twelve years old; Mrs. Lena Johannson, Mrs. Leonora Baker and Rose, who died when fifteen months old. Besides his wife and children, Mr. Gossman is survived by two brothers, II. Gossman, who lives in Illinois; and Thomas Gossman, who lives in Germany and also eight grandchildren.
Mr. Gossman was an early settler and knew the hardships of pioneer life. He worked hard and obtained his home and shared with his neighbors the work of building this community. He was one of the organizers of the Midland Evangelical church and has been at all times, a most faithful member of the same. He loved his Bible, loved to study the Sunday school lesson and was faithful in attendance even in spite of declining health. He has not only finished the course but has kept the faith, henceforth there is laid up for him the crown of eternal life which the Lord has promised to the faithful.d
