Lifetime Sterling resident Gene M. Evans died today, May 26, 1992, in the Hutchinson Hospital at the age of 50.
Born June 18, 1941, in Hutchinson to Henry Fayne and Helen Cox Evans. He married Eleanor Kay Henderson in California, Dec. 14, 1964. They divorced April 1971. Later he married Dorothy (Pickett) Powell Payne on December 24, 1974, in Sterling. He was a farmer, a Navy veteran and a member of the United Methodist Church of Sterling.
Survivors are his wife; two sons, Gene Michael Jr. of Salinas, Calif., and Charles Fayne of Sterling; a sister, Ellen Pearl Evans of Topeka; an aunt and uncle, Harold and Aileen Evans of Sterling; his stepmother, Helen Terrell Evans of Sterling; a stepson Kenneth Don Payne of Sterling; a stepdaughter of Donna Payne of Sterling; a stepbrother, Dennis Terrell of sterling; three stepsisters, Judy, Patty and Linda; and two step grandchildren.
Rev. Dave Cornett will conduct a funeral at 2 p.m. Friday at the chapel in the Sterling Community Cemetery.
Friends may call at Porter and Sillin Funeral Home from 3 until 8 p.m. Thursday.
A memorial fund has been started for Sterling College.
