Flora Elizabeth Lloyd, the eldest daughter of Catherine and E.B. Lloyd, was born in Pottstown, Pa., November 25, 1861. She passed away at her home in Sterling, on May 9, 1940, at the 78 years. She came to Kansas with the Lloyd family in the year of 1878.
On April 5, 1883, she was married to Melvin Lacey Edwards. To this union were born twelve children, three of whom died in infancy. Two sons, Horace, who died in France during the World War; and Lloyd who died in Boston while attending Theological Seminary, preceded her in death. Mr. Edwards went on before a little over a year ago. The surviving children are Lora of the home, Mrs. Vergil Kellams, of Arcadia, Florida; Parker, of Nashville, Melvin, of Burrton; Mrs. John Cundith, Sterling; and Wesley of Burrton; and a sister, Mrs. W. L. Davies, of Wichita. There are in addition 19 grandchildren and many friends who will deeply miss her. With the exception of about two years, the Edwards family lived in or near Sterling.
Among the earliest names connected with the Methodist church in Sterling are the Edwards and Lloyd families. Mr. Edwards’ father organized the first Methodist class, and Mr. Edwards was himself a charter member of the Sterling Methodist church. As early as 1878 the name of E.B. Lloyd appears in the list of trustees of the church, and through the years that interest and love for the church were maintained. Mrs. Edwards herself was a lifelong member of the church. The loyalty of the Edwards home to the church bore fruit in two daughters and a son was given for full-time Christian service. Up to the very last of life, Mrs. Edwards faithfully and gladly found her place regularly in the services of the church.
Mrs. Edwards was the first gold star mother of Sterling to pass away.
