Young Dougherty was born on March 12, 1842, his father, Andrew, was 32 and his mother, Margaret, was 36. He married Jane S. Jameson on September 26, 1869, in Weeping Water, Nebraska. They had five children in 12 years. He died on July 20, 1931, in Smith Center, Kansas, at the age of 89.
