STERLING – Donna Jean Detter, 83, died June 21, 2015, at Sterling Presbyterian Manor, Sterling. She was born June 8, 1932, in Hutchinson, KS, the daughter of Arthur Jean and Lucille Peterson Van Meter. A resident of Sterling since 1956, formerly of Nickerson, she was a homemaker, and a school bus driver for the Sterling School District for 13 years. She graduated from Nickerson High School.

She belonged to the Sterling United Methodist Church, U.M. W. and choir, was a Cub Scout den mother for five years. She was recognized by the State of Kansas for excellence in foster care.

 On April 22, 1951, she married Leonard D. Detter, at Nickerson United Methodist Church. He died January 28, 2002. Survivors include: two sons, Randy Jean Detter, Colorado Springs, Colo, and William Van “Bill” and Debbie Detter, Enid, Okla.; a daughter, Christina Lynn and Jon Patton, Highland Village, Texas; 29 foster children; a brother, Winton Lyle Van Meter, Pratt, Ks; two sisters, Mary Frances Jinkaway, Wichita, Ks., and Carol Lucille Knoll, Wichita, Ks.; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and daughter- in-law Denise Detter of Hoisington, Ks.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Leonard D. Detter, two sons, Brian Wayne, and Leonard Dwayne II, Detter, two brothers, Lloyd, and Wayne Van Meter, sister, Joyce Van Meter, and twin siblings, Earl and Ellen Van Meter.

 Funeral will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday June 24, 2015, at the United Methodist Church, Sterling, with the Rev. Bob Baer presiding. Visitation will be from 1 to 7 p.m. Tuesday June 23, 2015, at Birzer Funeral Home, Sterling, with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. Burial will be in Sterling Community Cemetery, Sterling. Memorials may be sent to the United Methodist Church of Sterling, or the Sterling Presbyterian Manor, both in care of Birzer Funeral Home, Sterling.
