When Judson Sutherland/Southland Chapin was born on January 17, 1841, in Jamestown, New York, his father, Asahel, was 36 and his mother, Catherine, was 20. He married Fanny Olney Clarke Chapin on October 31, 1867, in Conneaut, Ohio. They had two children during their marriage. He died on July 21, 1879, in Sterling, Kansas, at the age of 38, and was buried there.

When Fanny Olney Clarke Chapin was born on June 9, 1843, in Providence, Rhode Island, her father, William, was 40 and her mother, Caroline, was 33. She married Judson Sutherland/Southland Chapin and they had two children together. She had been married 11 years before her young husband/father died. She then married George Jeffries Pitman on August 25, 1878. (Date is incorrect.) She died in 1930 at the age of 87 having been married to George Pitman 52 years.
