Robert Orr Calderwood

Robert Orr CALDERWOOD was born on September 1, 1889, in Le Claire, Iowa, his father, William, was 50 and his mother, Mary, was 37. He married Nelle Mae Lindsay on June 7, 1928, in Sterling, Kansas. They had six children during their marriage. He died on May 9, 1967, in Sterling, Kansas, at the age of 77, and was buried there.

From Sterling Bulletin article, May 11, 1967:

Bob Calderwood was one of the truly good men it has been our fortune to know.

There was an essential morality about the man that somehow made him stand apart.

Bob held numerous positions of trust in civic life and in his church, and his faithfulness and deep sense of responsibility in these positions is a matter of record. If there was work to be done at home, and also at church, he would do the church work first,” an appreciative younger friend commented Wednesday.

Perhaps Bob’s “old fashioned” sense of values is what endeared him to many. Not a wealthy man by common standards, he buckled down to the matter of educating five children with Spartan courage.  All five are college graduates and now well established in their work.

But such a dedication brought with it sacrifices. Not many are aware that it was only in recent years-until the children were well along-that Bob and his wife felt they could afford the luxury of electricity, long after farm neighbors had been using it for years.

An early graduate of Sterling College, Bob enjoyed a special interest in the school and supported it loyally and generously.

Services for Mr. Calderwood will be held today from a church in which he was an elder for 44 years.  Dr. Spotts and Dr. McCreery will officiate. And of this good man and his works it will not be difficult to eulogize.    Max Moxley, Editor

Robert Orr Calderwood died May 9, 1967, after a brief illness. Born at LeClair, Iowa, in 1889, he had lived in the Sterling community since 1903, attending both Sterling High School and Sterling College. He had served 55 years as an elder in the local United Presbyterian Church, was on the City Board of Education for nine years, a member of the Township Board for thirteen years, and alumni representative on the Sterling College Board of Trustees for two terms. He was married to Nelle M. Lindsay in 1928. He wrote in 1962 for the Alumni Office: Our main claim to fame, if any, is the fact of the family’s interest in Sterling College. Our children can claim relationship to more than fifty persons who have at some time been students in old Cooper Hall.: He is survived by his wife of the home, and the five children: Lois Sieverling of Ft. Worth, Texas; Rev. Donald of West Pakistan; Frances, Robert L., and William, all of Sterling.
