Walter was a telegrapher for the railroad when he contracted influenza  and died of pneumonia.  He was survived by his wife, Blanche Thompson, whom he married in 1912 at Alexander, KS ,  and 3 children, Madge age 5, June age 3, Winifred age 18 mos. In 1917 he moved with his family to Maxwell, New Mexico where he died in service to the railroad..  Obituary appears 12 Dec 1918, p.8 The Sterling Kansas Bulletin.
