Obituary Sterling Bulletin 12/13/1917

Excerpt: Mr. Blades was born in Dover, Mason County, Kentucky, January 13, 1844 and was aged seventy three years ten months and twenty-four days of age at the time of his death. When a lad thirteen years of age he moved with his parents from Kentucky to Missouri. In 1862 he responded to the call of his country and enlisted in the Civil war as a member of Company B, 3rd Missouri Cavalry, and served until the end of the war. Later he enlisted with the regular army and gave his services to his country in the Indian warfare, where he showed much daring and bravery.

In his early manhood he became a member of the Masonic fraternity and for forty years was connected with the lodge in this city. He was the sexton of Cottonwood cemetery for 23 years but on account of his failing health gave the position over to other hands in August 1916.

Mr. Blades was married January 9, 1879, to Miss Idella Daniels of this city who preceded him in death three years ago. He is survived by four children, Misses Zella and Rose of this city, and A.J. and Sandys who are in the west.” Two sons Benjamin and William and one daughter, Della, passed away several years ago.
