Charles Blackledge Answers the Final Roll Call at the Age of 83Again the old soldiers of Sterling have been called upon to bury a member of the G. A. R., in the person of Charles Blackledge, who died early Tuesday morning in this city. His age was 83 years, 5 months and 21 days, having been born November 18, 1815, in Columbiana County, Ohio. In that State he lived till 1839, when married to Miss Hannah Beard, at Lynn, Ind., Mr. and Mrs. Blackledge went to Iowa two years later and settled on a farm near Salem.
To them were born seven children, four of whom are now living–their sons Hiram, Philander and Joseph and daughter Hannah. The first is an old resident of Sterling Township, the next is in Oklahoma and the other two live on farms in northern Nebraska. Soon after the death of his wife in 1854, Mr. Blackledge and children went from Iowa to Indiana, leaving them in the care of relatives. He soon went to Colorado, overland where he lived the life of a hunter and trapper near Pike’s Peak, till the war broke out. He again returned to Indiana and enlisted in ’62 in Co. A, 47th Indiana Volunteers. Since the war he lived on claims in Southern Missouri and Eastern Kansas till the last ten years spent with his son Hiram in and around Sterling. His survivors number fifty-four children, 26 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. The funeral on Wednesday was conducted by Rev. Jess Wilmore at the Friends Church and by the Meade Post at the burial in Cottonwood Cemetery.
