Obituary Reads…John Welda, one of Sterling’s oldest citizens, died at his home on Eighth Street, Tuesday morning after a long continued illness. His wife being also sick and unable to leave her bed the funeral was held at the residence on yesterday afternoon. The service, conducted by Rev. Woodward, were attended by a large number of sympathizing neighbors and friends. Father-in-law to Sarah H. (McMillen) Welda and Grandparents to Clarence Roy and Clara Belle Welda.Family links:

He was born March 30, 1944, in Wentworth, Mo., the son of Fredrick Jr and Roxie Blackson Spencer. A longtime resident of Rice County, he was a retired grain elevator laborer, having worked for Collingwood Grain/ADM, Little River. On May 20, 1966, he married Sharon Kay Elstun in Sterling. She died Sept. 4, 2003.  Survivors include two sons, Phillip, Galva, and Mark, Little River; two daughters, Patty Newcomb, Lyons, and Terri Hayes, Geneseo; two brothers, Bob Enlow, Okinawa, Japan, and Don Green, Sterling; a sister, Joyce Moore, Alden; and 14 grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by four brothers, Harlan Enlow, Ralph Enlow, Leonard Wood and Lester Wood(Enlow); and a sister, Pauline Dickey.Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Birzer-Sillin Funeral Home, Lyons, with Chaplain Scott Watford, presiding. Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. until service time Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Sterling Community Cemetery, Sterling.Memorials may be sent to the Junior Ray Spencer Memorial Fund in care of the funeral home.

She was born July 12, 1948, Hays, the daughter of Fred G., and Arlene T. Heldt Smith. She graduated from Sterling High School in 1966, attended Barton County Community College. She was a resident of St. Joseph, Mo., since 1991, formerly of Geneseo, Lyons and Hutchinson. She was a former employee of American Salt Co., Lyons.

She attended Fredrick Blvd Baptist Church, St. Joseph, Mo.

On Aug. 2, 1967, she married LeRoy Capps, Nevada, Texas. He survives.

Other survivors include: three sons, LeRoy Capps Jr., Lyons, John Thomas Capps, Tulsa, Okla., and David Capps, Wichita; a daughter, Tina Owens, El Paso, Texas; four brothers, Michael Smith, Robert Smith, Timothy Smith, all of South Hutchinson; Rodney Smith, Jonesboro, Ark.; four sisters, Geraline Elliott, Hutchinson, Linda Stover, Sterling, Connie Hess, Madison, and Cynthia Morales, South Hutchinson; and 13 grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by an infant brother, Dennis Smith; an infant grandson, Christopher James Capps.

Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Birzer-Sillin Funeral Home, Sterling, with Pastor Ken Conner presiding. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Sterling  Community Cemetery.

GLEASON Clara Jean Gleason – Age 84, went to be with the Lord on February 19, 2008 at Hill County Memorial Hospital, Fredericksburg, TX. She was born on September 19, 1923 in Enid, OK. She is the daughter of Oliver G. and Marion L. Wilson. She was a resident of Johnson City, TX for 15 years, formerly of San Antonio, TX and Sterling, KS. She was a retired business manager for Sterling College for 25 years. She graduated from Miltonvale High School in 1942 and attended Marion College, Marion, Indiana in 1943 and 1944. She was a member of United Presbyterian Church in Sterling and attended Liberty Lighthouse Fellowship in Johnson City, TX. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clair L. Gleason on June 29, 1986 and brother, Beverly Wilson. She is survived by daughters, Jeanette L. Johnson of Johnson City, TX and Dr. Marla J. Gleason Paslay of Bay Minette, AL; brothers, Charles R. Wilson of Brooksville, FL and John P. Wilson of San Diego, CA; sister, Eleanor M. Buckman of Johnson City, TX; 7 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild. Funeral services will be on Saturday, February 23, 2008 at 2pm at United Presbyterian Church, Sterling with Rev. Seth Svaty officiating. Burial will be in the Sterling Community Cemetery. Visitation will be on Saturday from 9 am-12 Noon at Birzer- Sillin Funeral Home and from Noon until service time at the church. The casket will remained closed.
